Although it may look complicated, the process is surprisingly straightforward when done step by step.

Below is a detailed guide to preparing this classic and colorful dessert at home.

Why This Dessert Is So Popular

There are several reasons why this dessert continues to be loved:

  • Visually stunning: The bright layers create a rainbow effect that looks impressive when sliced.
  • Light and refreshing: The gelatin texture makes it perfect after a heavy meal.
  • Customizable: You can change the colors and flavors depending on the occasion.
  • Fun to make: Creating each layer is almost like a small art project in the kitchen.

Ingredients

To make this dessert, you will need a few simple ingredients.

For the Colorful Layers

  • 1 package strawberry gelatin
  • 1 package orange gelatin
  • 1 package lemon gelatin
  • 1 package lime gelatin
  • 1 package berry or grape gelatin
  • 5 cups boiling water (1 cup per gelatin flavor)

For the Creamy Layers

  • 1 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 envelope unflavored gelatin
  • ½ cup cold water
  • ½ cup boiling water

Optional Garnishes

  • Whipped cream
  • Fresh fruit
  • Mint leaves

Equipment Needed

  • 9×13 inch glass dish or clear serving dish
  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups
  • Whisk or spoon
  • Refrigerator

Using a glass dish allows the colorful layers to be seen from the side, which enhances the visual appeal.

Step-by-Step Method

Step 1: Prepare the First Gelatin Layer

Start with the first flavor, such as strawberry.

  1. Place the strawberry gelatin powder into a mixing bowl.
  2. Pour 1 cup of boiling water over the powder.
  3. Stir continuously until the gelatin fully dissolves.
  4. Let it cool slightly for a few minutes.

Once cooled a bit, pour the mixture into your dish and place it in the refrigerator.

Allow it to chill for about 30–40 minutes, or until it is set but still slightly firm to the touch.

Step 2: Prepare the Cream Layer

While the first layer is setting, prepare the creamy mixture.

  1. Pour ½ cup cold water into a bowl.
  2. Sprinkle the unflavored gelatin over the water and let it sit for about 5 minutes to bloom.
  3. Add ½ cup boiling water and stir until dissolved.
  4. Mix in the sweetened condensed milk and stir until smooth.

This creamy mixture will be used between each colored layer.

Step 3: Add the First Cream Layer

Once the strawberry layer has set:

  1. Carefully pour a thin layer of the cream mixture over the top.
  2. Spread it evenly without disturbing the gelatin beneath.

Return the dish to the refrigerator for another 30 minutes until the cream layer becomes firm.

Step 4: Prepare the Next Colored Layer

Repeat the same process using the next gelatin flavor, such as orange.

  1. Dissolve the orange gelatin in 1 cup boiling water.
  2. Let it cool slightly so it does not melt the cream layer.
  3. Slowly pour it over the set cream layer.

Chill again for 30–40 minutes until firm.
