Baked Cheesy Breadsticks

Few things are more comforting than pulling a tray of homemade breadsticks from the oven and finding them golden, crisp around the edges, and covered with bubbling cheese. These baked cheesy breadsticks combine the savory richness of cheddar, mozzarella, and Parmesan for a delicious appetizer, snack, or side dish.

The outside develops a lightly crunchy crust while the center stays soft and tender. Garlic, butter, and Italian seasoning add extra flavor without overpowering the cheese.

Ingredients

For the breadsticks

  • 1 pound pizza dough, homemade or store-bought
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • ¼ cup finely grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley, optional
  • ¼ teaspoon salt, or to taste

Optional dipping sauce

  • Warm marinara sauce
  • Garlic butter
  • Ranch dressing

Step-by-Step Method

1. Prepare the oven

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.

A properly preheated oven is important because the high heat helps the dough puff while giving the cheese enough heat to become golden and slightly crisp.

2. Prepare the cheese mixture

In a small bowl, combine the shredded mozzarella, cheddar, and Parmesan.

Mozzarella provides the stretchy, melted texture, cheddar brings a sharper and more pronounced flavor, while Parmesan adds a salty, nutty finish and helps create those delicious browned spots on top.

Set the cheese aside while you prepare the dough.

3. Roll out the dough

Place the pizza dough on a lightly floured surface. Roll or gently stretch it into a rectangle approximately ¼ inch thick.

Try to keep the thickness fairly even. If some areas are extremely thin, they can become too crisp before the thicker portions are fully baked.

4. Add the garlic butter

Transfer the dough to the prepared baking sheet.

Mix the melted butter with garlic powder and Italian seasoning. Brush this mixture evenly over the entire surface of the dough.

For an especially flavorful finish, make sure the butter reaches all the way to the edges.

5. Add the cheese

Sprinkle the mozzarella and cheddar evenly over the buttered dough. Finish with the grated Parmesan.

Don’t pile all the cheese into the center. An even layer helps every breadstick develop a golden, cheesy topping.
