Baked Ham and Cheese Biscuits: A Warm, Buttery Step-by-Step Recipe
Baked Ham and Cheese Biscuits are soft, flaky, savory biscuits filled with tender ham and melted cheese. They are simple to prepare, comforting to eat, and perfect for breakfast, brunch, lunch boxes, snacks, or an easy family dinner. Each biscuit has a golden outside, a buttery crumb, salty ham, and gooey cheese tucked inside.
This recipe is great when you want something homemade but not complicated. You can serve these biscuits on their own, with eggs, soup, salad, or as a party appetizer. They are also a smart way to use leftover ham.
What Makes These Biscuits Special?
The best thing about baked ham and cheese biscuits is the balance of texture and flavor. The biscuit dough becomes tender and flaky in the oven, while the ham adds a savory, smoky taste. The cheese melts into the center, giving every bite a rich and satisfying flavor.
You can make them as stuffed biscuits, folded biscuit pockets, or drop biscuits with ham and cheese mixed directly into the dough. This version uses a simple homemade biscuit dough and fills it with ham and cheese for a warm, bakery-style result.
Ingredients
For the Biscuit Dough
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder, optional
- ½ cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
- ¾ cup cold milk or buttermilk
For the Filling
- 1 ½ cups cooked ham, diced or thinly sliced
- 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese, Swiss cheese, or mozzarella
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard or honey mustard, optional
- 1 tablespoon mayonnaise or cream cheese, optional
For the Topping
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon chopped parsley, optional
- A pinch of black pepper
Step 1: Prepare the Oven and Baking Tray
Preheat your oven to 400°F / 200°C.
Line a baking tray with parchment paper. This prevents the biscuits from sticking and makes cleanup easier.
If you want softer biscuit bottoms, use parchment paper. If you want crispier bottoms, lightly grease the tray instead.
Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, add the flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and garlic powder if using.
Stir everything together until evenly combined.
The baking powder helps the biscuits rise, while the small amount of sugar helps them brown nicely in the oven. Garlic powder is optional, but it adds a mild savory flavor that works very well with ham and cheese.
