Baked Ham & Cheese Roll-Ups

Baked Ham & Cheese Roll-Ups are the kind of easy, comforting appetizer that can turn a handful of simple ingredients into something everyone wants to reach for. Thin slices of savory ham and melty cheese are wrapped in soft dough, brushed with a flavorful buttery topping, and baked until golden and bubbling. The result is crisp around the edges, tender in the center, and packed with warm, cheesy flavor.

These roll-ups are especially useful when you need a quick snack, party appetizer, lunchbox addition, or casual weekend treat. They can be prepared ahead of time, customized with different cheeses and seasonings, and served either on their own or with a dipping sauce.

Why You’ll Love These Roll-Ups

There are several reasons this recipe is worth keeping in your regular rotation:

  • Simple ingredients: Most of what you need is easy to find.
  • Quick preparation: The roll-ups come together without complicated techniques.
  • Cheesy and flavorful: Melted cheese and savory ham make a satisfying combination.
  • Perfect for sharing: They can be sliced into small pieces for parties and gatherings.
  • Easy to customize: Different cheeses, meats, and seasonings can completely change the flavor.
  • Make-ahead friendly: Assemble them in advance and bake when you’re ready.

Ingredients

For the roll-ups:

  • 1 sheet refrigerated crescent roll dough or puff pastry
  • 8–10 thin slices deli ham
  • 6–8 slices Swiss, cheddar, provolone, or mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese
  • Optional: chopped fresh parsley for garnish

For serving, you can also prepare ranch dressing, honey mustard, marinara sauce, or another favorite dipping sauce.

Step-by-Step Method

1. Preheat the Oven

Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it to prevent the roll-ups from sticking.

Allowing the oven to fully preheat before baking helps the dough cook evenly and gives the outside a beautiful golden finish.

2. Prepare the Dough

Unroll the crescent dough or puff pastry onto a lightly floured work surface. If using crescent dough, gently press the seams together so you have one continuous sheet.

Try to keep the dough in an even rectangle. If some areas are much thinner than others, the finished roll may bake unevenly.

3. Add the Ham

Arrange the ham slices evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges. Avoid piling the ham too thickly in one area because an even layer makes the roll easier to shape and slice.

If your ham slices are particularly large, overlap them slightly to cover the surface without creating excessive thickness.

4. Layer on the Cheese

Place the cheese evenly over the ham.

Swiss gives the roll-ups a slightly nutty flavor, while cheddar creates a richer and sharper result. Provolone melts beautifully and has a mild flavor, and mozzarella produces an especially stretchy filling.

For the best texture, avoid adding so much cheese that it will spill excessively from the sides during baking.

5. Roll Everything Up

Starting from one of the long sides, carefully roll the dough into a tight log.

Take your time during this step. Roll firmly enough to keep the filling together, but don’t compress the dough so much that the filling is pushed out.

Once you reach the opposite edge, gently pinch the seam closed.

Place the roll seam-side down for a few minutes while you prepare the topping. This helps prevent it from opening during baking.
