Cheeseburger Puff Pastry Twists

If you love the classic combination of juicy ground beef, melted cheese, and savory burger flavors, these Cheeseburger Puff Pastry Twists are a fun way to turn those familiar ingredients into a crispy, golden appetizer. Instead of serving the filling between a traditional bun, seasoned beef and cheese are layered inside flaky puff pastry, then twisted into easy-to-eat golden strips.

They work beautifully as a party appetizer, game-day snack, casual lunch, or an easy dinner alongside a simple salad or roasted vegetables. The best part is that they look impressive while requiring surprisingly little preparation.

Why You’ll Love These Cheeseburger Puff Pastry Twists

These twists bring together several textures and flavors in every bite. The puff pastry becomes crisp and buttery on the outside, while the seasoned beef provides a savory center and the cheese melts into the filling.

A few simple additions give the twists that recognizable cheeseburger character. Finely chopped onion adds sweetness and flavor, while ketchup and mustard provide the familiar tangy notes associated with a classic burger.

They’re also easy to customize. You can use cheddar for a traditional cheeseburger flavor, experiment with another melting cheese, or add finely chopped pickles for extra tang.

Ingredients

For the cheeseburger filling:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 small yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

For the pastry:

  • 1 package frozen puff pastry, thawed according to package directions
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • Sesame seeds, optional

For serving:

  • Ketchup
  • Mustard
  • Burger sauce or your favorite dipping sauce
  • Finely chopped pickles, optional

Step-by-Step Method

Step 1: Prepare the Ground Beef

Place a large skillet over medium heat and add the ground beef. Break it apart with a wooden spoon or spatula as it cooks.

Add the finely chopped onion and continue cooking until the beef is fully cooked and the onion has softened.

Drain away excess grease if necessary. This step is important because too much moisture or grease can make the puff pastry difficult to crisp.

Step 2: Season the Filling

Return the skillet to low heat and stir in the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, ketchup, and mustard.

Mix everything thoroughly so the seasonings and sauces coat the beef evenly.

Cook for another minute or two, then remove the skillet from the heat.

Allow the beef mixture to cool for several minutes. A warm filling is easier to spread after it has cooled slightly and is less likely to soften the pastry too much.

Step 3: Prepare the Puff Pastry

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Lightly flour your work surface and unfold the thawed puff pastry.

Gently roll it out just enough to smooth the seams and create an even sheet. Avoid rolling it excessively thin because you want the pastry to have enough layers to puff beautifully in the oven.
