Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (30-ounce) bag frozen shredded hash browns, thawed
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • Chopped parsley for garnish (optional)

Step 1: Prepare the Oven and Baking Dish

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or butter to prevent sticking and make serving easier.

Step 2: Cook the Ground Beef

Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until it begins to brown, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon as it cooks.

Add the diced onion and continue cooking for about 4–5 minutes until the onion becomes soft and translucent.

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

Drain any excess grease from the skillet to keep the casserole from becoming oily.

Season the beef mixture with onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Stir well so the seasonings evenly coat the meat.

Step 3: Make the Creamy Mixture

In a large mixing bowl, combine:

  • Cream of mushroom soup
  • Sour cream
  • Milk
  • 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese

Whisk everything together until smooth and creamy.

Fold the thawed hash browns into the mixture, making sure every piece is coated in the creamy sauce.

Step 4: Combine Everything

Add the cooked hamburger mixture to the bowl with the hash browns.

Gently stir until all the ingredients are evenly combined. The mixture should be thick, creamy, and well distributed.
