Let’s dive into the detailed method for making this indulgent bake step by step.

Ingredients

For the Beef Layer:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup beef broth (or water)
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste

For the Potato Layer:

  • 4-5 large potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet work best)
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (divided)
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Beef Mixture

  1. Cook the ground beef: In a large skillet, heat a tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until it begins to brown, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks. This will take about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Add the onion and garlic: Once the beef is browned, add the finely chopped onion and minced garlic to the pan. Cook for another 3-4 minutes until the onion softens and becomes translucent.
  3. Season the mixture: Sprinkle in the dried thyme, oregano, paprika, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine. The spices will infuse the beef mixture with flavor.
  4. Add the tomato paste and broth: Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 2 minutes, allowing it to meld with the beef. Add the beef broth (or water) and stir again. Let the mixture simmer for 5-10 minutes until most of the liquid has evaporated and the beef is nicely seasoned and saucy. Set aside.

Step 2: Prepare the Potato Layer

  1. Slice the potatoes: Peel the potatoes (if desired) and slice them into 1/8-inch thick rounds using a sharp knife or mandolin. The thinner the slices, the creamier the final bake will be.
  2. Make the cream sauce: In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant. Then, pour in the heavy cream and milk. Bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring frequently.
  3. Season the sauce: Add the fresh thyme, salt, and pepper to taste. Let the sauce simmer for about 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly.
  4. Incorporate the cheeses: Reduce the heat to low and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and Parmesan cheese. Continue stirring until the cheese melts completely, creating a creamy, cheesy sauce. Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary.
