Chocolate Chip Cookies
Few homemade desserts are as comforting and universally loved as a warm batch of chocolate chip cookies. Crisp around the edges, soft and chewy in the center, and filled with pockets of melted chocolate, these cookies are simple enough for a beginner to make but delicious enough to become a family favorite.
This recipe focuses on creating a balanced cookie with buttery flavor, lightly crisp edges, a soft middle, and plenty of chocolate chips. The dough comes together with everyday ingredients, and a short chilling period helps the cookies develop better flavor and texture.
Ingredients
- 1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter, softened
- ¾ cup (150 g) granulated sugar
- ¾ cup (165 g) packed light brown sugar
- 2 large eggs, preferably at room temperature
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2¾ cups (345 g) all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- 2 cups (340 g) semisweet chocolate chips
- Optional: ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans
- Optional: Flaky sea salt, for finishing
Step-by-Step Method
1. Prepare the Oven and Baking Sheets
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
Preparing the baking sheets first makes the process easier because the cookie dough can go straight onto the trays once it is ready.
2. Combine the Dry Ingredients
In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
Mixing these ingredients separately helps distribute the leavening agents and salt evenly throughout the flour. Set the bowl aside while you prepare the wet ingredients.
3. Cream the Butter and Sugars
Place the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar in a large mixing bowl.
Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, beat the mixture for about 2–3 minutes, until it becomes lighter, creamy, and slightly fluffy.
This step is important because properly creamed butter incorporates air into the mixture and contributes to the cookie’s texture.
