Method:
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Lightly grease an 8-inch square or round baking pan.
Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients
- In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Stir until all the dry ingredients are well combined.
Step 3: Create the Wells
- Make three small wells (indentations) in the dry mixture.
- In one well, pour in the vinegar.
- In the second well, pour in the vanilla extract.
- In the third well, pour in the vegetable oil.
Step 4: Add the Water
- Pour the water over all the ingredients in the bowl.
- Stir the mixture with a spoon or spatula until it is smooth and free of lumps. The batter will be thin, which is normal.
Step 5: Bake the Cake
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading it out evenly.
- Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes.
- Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center of the cake. If it comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs, the cake is done.
Step 6: Cool the Cake
- Remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes.
- After 10 minutes, transfer the cake to a wire rack to cool completely.
Step 7: Serve and Enjoy
- Once cooled, you can dust the cake with powdered sugar or serve it with a simple chocolate glaze or frosting.
- Slice and enjoy your Chocolate Depression Cake with a cup of coffee, tea, or a glass of milk.
Tips for a Perfect Chocolate Depression Cake:
- Use good quality cocoa powder: Since the cake relies heavily on cocoa powder for its chocolate flavor, using a high-quality brand will make a big difference.
- Customize the flavor: You can add a teaspoon of instant coffee granules to the dry ingredients to enhance the chocolate flavor even more.
- Frosting options: Although traditionally served plain or with a dusting of powdered sugar, you can top the cake with a simple chocolate glaze or your favorite frosting.
- Double the recipe: If you’re feeding a crowd or want leftovers, this recipe doubles easily. Just use a larger pan and adjust the baking time accordingly.
