Cottage Pie: A Cozy, Hearty Classic

There are few meals as comforting as a bubbling dish of Cottage Pie coming out of the oven. With a savory, richly seasoned beef filling tucked beneath a blanket of creamy mashed potatoes, this traditional-style comfort food turns simple ingredients into a satisfying dinner the whole family can enjoy.

The beauty of Cottage Pie is in its layers. The bottom is packed with tender ground beef, onions, carrots, peas, and a flavorful gravy. The top is smooth and buttery on the inside, while the ridges of mashed potato become beautifully golden and crisp in the oven. It is hearty, inexpensive, and perfect for a cozy evening at home.

What Is Cottage Pie?

Cottage Pie is a classic British comfort dish made with seasoned ground beef cooked with vegetables and gravy, then topped with mashed potatoes and baked until golden.

It is often confused with Shepherd’s Pie, but there is an important distinction: traditionally, Cottage Pie is made with beef, while Shepherd’s Pie is made with lamb.

This recipe keeps the preparation straightforward while building plenty of flavor through browning the beef, slowly cooking the vegetables, and allowing the filling to simmer until thick and rich.

Ingredients

For the Mashed Potato Topping

  • 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup milk, warmed
  • ½ teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese, optional

For the Beef Filling

  • 1½ pounds ground beef
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced
  • 2 carrots, peeled and diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon dried rosemary
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil, if needed

Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes

Start by preparing the mashed potato topping.

Place the peeled and chopped potatoes in a large saucepan and cover them with cold water. Add a generous pinch of salt.

Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat and cook the potatoes for approximately 15–20 minutes, or until they are completely tender when pierced with a fork.

Drain them thoroughly and allow them to sit for a minute or two so excess moisture can evaporate.

Step 2: Make the Creamy Mashed Potatoes

Return the warm potatoes to the saucepan and add the butter.

Mash until mostly smooth. Slowly pour in the warm milk while continuing to mash until the potatoes become creamy and fluffy.

Season with salt and black pepper.

For an extra-rich topping, stir in shredded cheddar cheese. Set the mashed potatoes aside while you prepare the filling.

Tip: Avoid overmixing the potatoes. Excessive mixing can make mashed potatoes sticky rather than light and fluffy.

Step 3: Brown the Ground Beef

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Heat a large skillet or oven-safe pan over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon.

Continue cooking until the beef is browned and no longer pink.

If there is a large amount of excess fat in the pan, carefully drain some of it before continuing.

Browning the meat properly is an important step because it gives the filling a deeper, more savory flavor.
