Death By Chocolate Bundt Cake: A Rich, Moist, Step-by-Step Chocolate Dessert Recipe

Death By Chocolate Bundt Cake is a deep, dark, ultra-moist chocolate cake made for true chocolate lovers. It has a soft chocolate crumb, rich cocoa flavor, melted chocolate chips inside, and a glossy chocolate glaze poured over the top. The Bundt shape makes it look beautiful without needing complicated decoration, while the flavor tastes like a bakery-style dessert.

This cake is perfect for birthdays, holidays, dinner parties, family gatherings, or anytime you want a dramatic chocolate dessert. It is called “Death By Chocolate” because every layer is full of chocolate: chocolate cake, chocolate chips, and chocolate ganache.

Why This Cake Is So Special

A good Death By Chocolate Bundt Cake should be moist, rich, and dense enough to feel indulgent, but still soft enough to slice easily. The secret is using a combination of cocoa powder, sour cream, oil, eggs, and chocolate chips. The sour cream keeps the cake tender, the oil adds moisture, and the chocolate chips melt slightly during baking to create rich chocolate pockets inside the cake.

The final chocolate glaze gives the cake a shiny, luxurious finish and makes it look impressive with very little effort.

Ingredients

For the Chocolate Bundt Cake

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • ¾ cup whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ½ cup hot coffee or hot water
  • 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

For the Chocolate Glaze

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Optional Decoration

  • Extra chocolate chips
  • Chocolate curls
  • Cocoa powder
  • Powdered sugar
  • Fresh berries
  • Chopped nuts

Step 1: Prepare the Bundt Pan

Preheat the oven to 350°F / 175°C.

Grease a 10-cup or 12-cup Bundt pan very well. Use softened butter or baking spray, making sure to cover every curve and corner of the pan.

After greasing, dust the inside lightly with cocoa powder instead of flour. Cocoa powder prevents white marks from appearing on the chocolate cake.

This step is very important because Bundt cakes can stick easily if the pan is not prepared properly.

Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, add the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Whisk everything together until evenly combined.

Mixing the dry ingredients first helps distribute the cocoa, leavening agents, and salt evenly throughout the cake. This gives the cake a better texture and helps it rise properly.

Step 3: Combine the Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, whisk the eggs, sour cream, vegetable oil, milk, and vanilla extract.

The mixture should look smooth and creamy.

Sour cream is one of the most important ingredients in this cake. It adds moisture and richness while giving the crumb a soft, tender texture.

Step 4: Make the Chocolate Batter

Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl of dry ingredients.

Mix gently using a whisk or spatula until the batter begins to come together.

Do not overmix. Overmixing can make the cake heavy or tough. Mix only until most of the flour disappears.

At this stage, the batter will be thick and chocolatey.

Step 5: Add Hot Coffee or Hot Water

Slowly pour in the hot coffee or hot water while stirring.

Hot liquid helps bloom the cocoa powder, which makes the chocolate flavor deeper and stronger. Coffee does not make the cake taste like coffee; it simply enhances the chocolate.

The batter will become thinner after adding the hot liquid. This is normal.
