Deep Dish Cheeseburger Pie
If you love the classic flavors of a juicy cheeseburger but want something warm, comforting, and easy to serve to the whole family, Deep Dish Cheeseburger Pie is a perfect choice. This hearty baked dish combines seasoned ground beef, onions, plenty of melted cheese, and a tender golden crust in one deep-dish pie.
Unlike a traditional burger, everything is baked together, allowing the savory beef filling and cheese to mingle beneath a beautifully browned crust. It is simple enough for a weeknight dinner but satisfying enough to bring to a casual family gathering.
Why You’ll Love This Cheeseburger Pie
This recipe is especially appealing because it uses familiar ingredients without requiring complicated cooking techniques. The beef is browned first so it develops plenty of flavor, while onions add sweetness and texture. Cheese brings the unmistakable cheeseburger character, and the crust creates a satisfying contrast to the rich filling.
You can also customize the pie with your favorite burger toppings, such as pickles, mustard, ketchup, bacon, or even a little diced tomato.
Ingredients
For the filling:
- 1 ½ pounds ground beef
- 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- ½ cup beef broth
- 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 2 tablespoons chopped dill pickles, optional
For the crust:
- 1 refrigerated pie crust or homemade pie dough
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon water
For serving, optional:
- Extra shredded cheddar
- Pickle slices
- Ketchup
- Mustard
- Diced green onions
Step-by-Step Method
1. Prepare the Oven and Pie Dish
Start by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Lightly grease a deep 9-inch pie dish. A deep-dish pie plate is ideal because it gives the beef filling plenty of room without making the crust too thin.
Place your pie crust into the dish, gently pressing it against the bottom and sides. Leave a little excess dough around the edge so you can create a decorative or folded crust later.
Set the prepared crust aside while you make the filling.
2. Brown the Ground Beef
Place a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the ground beef.
Break it apart with a wooden spoon or spatula as it cooks. Continue cooking until the beef is thoroughly browned and no longer pink.
If there is a large amount of excess grease in the skillet, carefully drain some of it. Leaving a small amount behind helps keep the filling flavorful without making the pie overly greasy.
3. Add the Onion and Garlic
Add the diced onion to the browned beef.
Cook for approximately 4–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onion becomes soft and slightly translucent.
Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30–60 seconds, just until fragrant.
Be careful not to let the garlic burn, as burnt garlic can give the entire filling a bitter flavor.
4. Season the Beef
Sprinkle in the salt, black pepper, paprika, and onion powder.
Then add the ketchup, yellow mustard, and Worcestershire sauce.
Stir everything together until the seasonings are evenly distributed throughout the beef.
At this stage, the mixture should already smell like a classic cheeseburger.
