Dorito Taco Salad: A Bold, Crunchy Crowd-Pleaser

Dorito Taco Salad is the perfect fusion of fresh vegetables, seasoned meat, creamy dressing, and the unmistakable crunch of nacho-flavored chips. It’s colorful, satisfying, and ideal for potlucks, family dinners, game days, or quick weeknight meals. What makes this salad special is the balance between warm, savory taco meat and cool, crisp toppings—all finished with crunchy cheese-flavored chips that take it to the next level.

Below is a detailed, step-by-step guide to making this irresistible dish from scratch.

Ingredients You’ll Need

For the Taco Meat:

  • 1 pound (450g) ground beef (or ground turkey for a lighter option)
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 packet taco seasoning (or homemade blend)
  • ½ cup water
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Salad Base:

  • 1 large head iceberg lettuce, chopped
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or Mexican blend)
  • 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans or black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup corn kernels (fresh, canned, or thawed frozen)
  • ½ cup sliced black olives (optional)

For the Dressing:

  • 1 cup Catalina or French dressing
  • ½ cup sour cream
(Alternatively, use ranch dressing for a creamier version.)

The Star Ingredient:

  • 1 large bag nacho cheese-flavored tortilla chips (lightly crushed)

Step-by-Step Method

Step 1: Prepare the Taco Meat

Start by heating a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until it begins to brown, breaking it up into small crumbles with a spatula.

Add the diced onion and cook for about 3–4 minutes until softened. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds, just until fragrant.

Drain excess grease if necessary. Sprinkle the taco seasoning over the meat, then add ½ cup water. Stir well and allow it to simmer for about 5–7 minutes until the mixture thickens and becomes richly flavored.

Remove from heat and let the meat cool slightly. Warm meat works well, but you don’t want it too hot or it will wilt the lettuce.

Step 2: Prepare the Salad Ingredients

While the meat cools, prepare your vegetables.

  • Chop the iceberg lettuce into bite-sized pieces.
  • Halve the cherry tomatoes.
  • Rinse and drain the beans thoroughly.
  • Measure out the corn and cheese.

Place everything into a large mixing bowl. Use a bowl big enough to allow easy tossing later.
