Easy Homemade Bread

Step 4: First Rise

Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours or until it doubles in size. A warm oven (turned off) or a sunny spot in the kitchen is ideal for this step.

Step 5: Shape the Dough

Once the dough has doubled in size, punch it down gently to release any air bubbles. Transfer it to a floured surface and shape it into a loaf. You can place it into a greased loaf pan or shape it into a round loaf on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Step 6: Second Rise

Cover the shaped dough with a towel and let it rise again for 30-45 minutes. This second rise allows the bread to become light and airy.

Step 7: Bake the Bread

Preheat your oven to 375Β°F (190Β°C). If desired, brush the top of the dough with an egg wash (1 beaten egg mixed with a tablespoon of water) or melted butter for a golden, shiny crust. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Step 8: Cool and Enjoy

Once baked, remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 15-20 minutes before slicing. This helps retain its moisture and texture.

Tips for Success:

  • Check the yeast: If the yeast doesn’t foam in step 1, it may be expired. Use fresh yeast for the best results.
  • Control the flour: Start with the recommended amount of flour and add a little more if the dough is too sticky.
  • Make it your own: Add herbs, cheese, or seeds for extra flavor and texture.

Enjoy your homemade bread warm with butter, as a sandwich, or toasted with jam. Happy baking!
