What Makes Everything Bagel Bits Special?

Everything bagel seasoning has become a staple in kitchens for good reason. The combination of nutty seeds, aromatic garlic and onion, and subtle saltiness creates layers of flavor in every bite. When baked into small dough balls, these flavors intensify and toast beautifully, giving you crunchy edges and a soft, tender interior.

Ingredients You’ll Need

For the Dough:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 cup warm water (not hot)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

For Boiling:

  • 8 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda

For the Topping:

  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds
  • 1 tablespoon dried minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon dried minced onion
  • 1 teaspoon coarse salt

(You can also use pre-made everything bagel seasoning if you prefer.)

Step-by-Step Method

Step 1: Activate the Yeast

In a mixing bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for 5–10 minutes. The mixture should become foamy. This means the yeast is active and ready to use.

If it doesn’t foam, your yeast may be expired or the water may have been too hot.

Step 2: Make the Dough

Add the flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Stir until a shaggy dough forms. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

You’ll know it’s ready when:

  • It feels soft but not sticky.
  • It springs back when gently pressed.

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Step 3: Prepare the Everything Topping

While the dough rises, mix together sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried garlic, dried onion, and coarse salt in a small bowl. Set aside.

This blend will be pressed onto the surface of each dough bite later.

Step 4: Shape the Bits

Once the dough has doubled, punch it down gently to release air. Divide it into small pieces—about the size of a walnut. Roll each piece into a smooth ball.

Place the balls on a parchment-lined baking sheet while you finish shaping the rest.
