Ground Beef and Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes: A Comforting Homemade Classic

Few meals capture the feeling of home quite like a warm plate of ground beef and gravy over creamy mashed potatoes. This dish is the perfect combination of simple ingredients transformed into something deeply satisfying. Tender seasoned ground beef is cooked in a rich, savory gravy and served over a bed of buttery mashed potatoes that soak up every delicious drop. It is affordable, easy to prepare, and ideal for busy weeknight dinners when you want something hearty and comforting.

Unlike complicated recipes that require special ingredients, this classic meal relies on pantry staples and traditional cooking techniques. The secret is building layers of flavor: browning the beef properly, creating a smooth gravy, and preparing mashed potatoes with the right texture.

Why This Dish Is So Loved

Ground beef and gravy over mashed potatoes has remained a favorite comfort food because it combines several elements people naturally crave: warmth, richness, and familiar flavors. The mashed potatoes provide a creamy base, while the beef gravy adds a savory depth that turns ordinary ingredients into a complete meal.

It is also a versatile recipe. You can add vegetables such as peas, carrots, or mushrooms, adjust the seasoning to your preference, or make the gravy thicker or lighter depending on the texture you enjoy.

Ingredients

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 2 pounds potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes work well)
  • ½ cup milk or cream, warmed
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

For the Ground Beef and Gravy:

  • 1½ pounds ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Optional: fresh parsley for garnish

Step-by-Step Method

Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes

Start by preparing the mashed potatoes because they will need time to cook while you make the beef and gravy.

Peel the potatoes and cut them into evenly sized pieces. Place them in a large pot and cover them with cold water. Add a pinch of salt and bring the water to a boil.

Cook the potatoes for about 15–20 minutes, or until they become tender when pierced with a fork. Drain them well and allow them to sit for a minute so excess moisture can evaporate.

Mash the potatoes while they are still warm. Add butter first, allowing it to melt into the potatoes, then gradually add warm milk or cream until you reach a smooth and creamy consistency. Season with salt and pepper.

Keep the mashed potatoes warm while preparing the gravy.

Step 2: Brown the Ground Beef

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and break it apart with a wooden spoon.

Cook the beef until it is browned and no longer pink. Proper browning is important because it creates deeper flavor and gives the gravy a richer taste.

Once cooked, drain excess grease if necessary, leaving a small amount for flavor. Add the chopped onion and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
