🌿 Ingredients

For the Ground Beef and Gravy:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (preferably 85% lean)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth (or as needed)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp dried thyme (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (optional, for browning)

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 4–5 medium russet or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup milk (warm)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Optional: ¼ cup sour cream or heavy cream for extra creaminess

🍳 Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes

  1. Peel and chop the potatoes into evenly sized chunks to ensure they cook uniformly.
  2. Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add a teaspoon of salt.
  3. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce to a simmer and cook for about 15–20 minutes, or until a fork easily pierces the potatoes.
  4. Once cooked, drain the potatoes well and return them to the pot.

Step 2: Mash the Potatoes

  1. Add the butter to the hot potatoes and let it melt.
  2. Pour in the warm milk, then mash the potatoes using a masher or hand mixer until smooth and creamy.
  3. Season with salt and pepper, adjusting to your taste.
  4. For a richer texture, stir in sour cream or heavy cream.
  5. Keep the mashed potatoes warm while you prepare the beef and gravy.

Step 3: Cook the Ground Beef

  1. In a large skillet, heat olive oil or butter over medium heat.
  2. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spatula until browned.
  3. When nearly done, add the chopped onion and garlic, sautéing until the onion becomes soft and translucent (about 3–5 minutes).
  4. Drain excess grease if necessary, leaving about a tablespoon in the pan for flavor.
