Ground Beef and Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes

A Comforting Homemade Classic

Few dishes capture the feeling of comfort food as perfectly as ground beef and gravy served over creamy mashed potatoes. This hearty meal is simple, budget-friendly, and incredibly satisfying. The rich savory gravy, tender ground beef, and fluffy potatoes come together to create a warm and filling dish that is perfect for family dinners, especially on chilly evenings.

One of the best things about this recipe is how easy it is to prepare with basic pantry ingredients. Even beginner cooks can make it successfully, and the result tastes like something that simmered on the stove all day.

Ingredients

For the Mashed Potatoes

  • 2 pounds potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet work best)
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup warm milk or cream
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste

For the Ground Beef and Gravy

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Optional garnish:

  • Fresh parsley, chopped

Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes

Start by peeling the potatoes and cutting them into medium-sized chunks. Cutting them into similar sizes helps them cook evenly.

Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover them with cold water. Add a generous pinch of salt to the water. Bring the pot to a boil over medium-high heat.

Let the potatoes cook for about 15–20 minutes, or until they are fork-tender. You should be able to easily pierce them with a fork without resistance.

Step 2: Mash the Potatoes

Drain the cooked potatoes well and return them to the pot.

Add the butter and allow it to melt from the heat of the potatoes. Pour in the warm milk and begin mashing using a potato masher.

Continue mashing until the potatoes become smooth and creamy. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Cover the pot and set aside to keep warm while you prepare the beef and gravy.
