Hamburger Steak Bake: A Comforting One-Pan Dinner Recipe
Hamburger Steak Bake is a delicious and comforting casserole-style meal that combines juicy seasoned ground beef patties, a rich savory gravy, tender onions, and melted cheese baked together into one satisfying dish. It has all the flavors of a classic hamburger steak but with the convenience of an easy oven-baked recipe.
This dish is perfect for busy weeknight dinners, family meals, potlucks, or whenever you want a hearty homemade meal without spending hours in the kitchen. The combination of tender beef, creamy sauce, and flavorful seasonings creates a warm, comforting dish that pairs beautifully with mashed potatoes, rice, noodles, or vegetables.
What Makes Hamburger Steak Bake Special?
Traditional hamburger steak is usually made by pan-frying seasoned beef patties and serving them with onion gravy. This baked version simplifies the process by combining everything in one dish and allowing the oven to bring the flavors together.
The beef patties become tender and flavorful as they bake, while the onions soften and add sweetness to the gravy. The result is a meal that tastes like a homemade diner classic but is easy enough for everyday cooking.
Ingredients
For the Hamburger Steaks
- 1 ½ pounds ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
- 1 large egg
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- ½ cup milk
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (optional)
For the Gravy Sauce
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced (optional)
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- ½ cup heavy cream or milk
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
For the Topping
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Step 1: Prepare the Beef Mixture
Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, and milk.
The breadcrumbs and milk help create a softer, more tender hamburger steak instead of a dense meat patty.
Add the diced onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, and parsley.
Mix everything gently with your hands or a spoon until the ingredients are evenly combined.
Avoid overmixing because it can make the beef tough.
Step 2: Shape the Hamburger Steaks
Divide the beef mixture into equal portions.
Shape each portion into an oval-shaped patty, similar to a traditional hamburger steak.
You can make 5 to 6 medium-sized patties depending on your preferred serving size.
Place them on a lightly greased baking dish.
For extra flavor, you can quickly sear the patties in a skillet for 2 to 3 minutes per side before baking. This creates a browned crust, but it is optional.
Step 3: Prepare the Onion Gravy
Heat a large skillet over medium heat.
Add butter and allow it to melt.
Add the sliced onions and cook for 5 to 7 minutes until they become soft and slightly golden.
If using mushrooms, add them and cook until they release their moisture and begin to brown.
Sprinkle flour over the onions and mushrooms.
Stir continuously for about 1 minute. This creates a roux that thickens the gravy.
