Loaded Doritos Taco Salad: A Crunchy, Colorful Tex-Mex Salad Recipe
Loaded Doritos Taco Salad is a fun, bold, and satisfying dish made with seasoned ground beef, crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes, shredded cheese, beans, corn, creamy dressing, and crunchy Doritos. It has all the flavors of a taco, but it is served as a fresh salad with a delicious cheesy crunch in every bite.
This recipe is perfect for family dinners, potlucks, parties, summer meals, game nights, or casual gatherings. It is easy to prepare, full of flavor, and flexible enough to adjust with your favorite toppings.
Why This Salad Is So Popular
The best part of Loaded Doritos Taco Salad is the mix of textures. The lettuce is fresh and crisp, the beef is warm and savory, the cheese is creamy, the vegetables are juicy, and the Doritos add a bold cheesy crunch.
Unlike a plain green salad, this dish feels hearty and exciting. It can be served as a main dish or as a side. It is also a great recipe when you want something quick but still flavorful and filling.
Ingredients
For the Taco Meat
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 tablespoon oil, if needed
- 1 packet taco seasoning, or homemade taco seasoning
- ⅓ cup water
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- Salt and black pepper to taste
For the Salad
- 1 large head romaine lettuce, chopped
- 2 cups Doritos, lightly crushed
- 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ cup black beans, drained and rinsed
- ½ cup corn, drained
- ½ cup red onion, finely diced
- 1 avocado, diced
- ½ cup sliced black olives, optional
- ½ cup jalapeños, optional
- ¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped
For the Dressing
- ½ cup sour cream
- ½ cup ranch dressing
- 2 tablespoons salsa
- 1 tablespoon lime juice
- ½ teaspoon taco seasoning
- 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro, optional
Step 1: Cook the Ground Beef
Place a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and break it apart with a spoon.
Cook the beef for 6 to 8 minutes, stirring often, until it is fully browned and no pink remains.
If there is too much grease in the pan, drain the excess fat. This keeps the salad from becoming oily.
Step 2: Season the Beef
Add taco seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, black pepper, and water to the cooked beef.
Stir well until the meat is evenly coated with seasoning.
Let the beef simmer for 3 to 5 minutes, or until the liquid reduces and the meat becomes rich and flavorful.
Remove the skillet from the heat and let the beef cool slightly. It should be warm, not extremely hot, when added to the salad. If it is too hot, it can wilt the lettuce.
Step 3: Prepare the Lettuce
Wash the romaine lettuce well and dry it completely.
Chop the lettuce into bite-sized pieces and place it in a large salad bowl.
Dry lettuce is important because wet lettuce can make the salad soggy and dilute the dressing.
Romaine works very well because it stays crisp, but iceberg lettuce can also be used for extra crunch.
