Pasta Shells With Ground Beef Recipe: A Comforting, Flavor-Packed Dinner Made Step by Step

Few dishes capture the feeling of a warm homemade meal quite like pasta shells with ground beef. This recipe combines tender pasta shells, a rich and savory beef filling, aromatic herbs, and a delicious tomato-based sauce to create a satisfying dish that works perfectly for family dinners, meal preparation, or a cozy weekend meal.

Unlike ordinary pasta dishes where sauce simply coats noodles, pasta shells act like small pockets that hold the flavors inside. Every bite delivers a combination of juicy seasoned beef, creamy textures, and Italian-inspired seasoning.

Ingredients

For the Pasta and Beef Filling

  • 300–400 g large pasta shells (jumbo shells work best)
  • 500 g ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon chili flakes (optional)

For the Sauce

  • 2 cups tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • ½ teaspoon sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Fresh basil or parsley (optional)

For the Cheese Layer

  • 1 cup ricotta cheese (optional but recommended)
  • 1½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Step-by-Step Cooking Method

Step 1: Prepare the Pasta Shells

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.

Add the pasta shells and cook them until they are slightly softer than al dente but still firm enough to hold their shape. Overcooking can make them break while filling.

Drain the shells and rinse them gently with cool water to stop the cooking process.

Set them aside while preparing the filling.

Step 2: Cook the Ground Beef Filling

Heat olive oil in a large pan over medium heat.

Add the chopped onion and cook for about 2–3 minutes until it becomes soft and slightly golden.

Add minced garlic and stir for another 30 seconds until fragrant.

Now add the ground beef.

Break the meat apart with a spoon and cook until it turns brown and no longer remains pink.

Season with:

  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Paprika
  • Italian seasoning
  • Chili flakes (if using)

Continue cooking for another 2–3 minutes so the spices blend into the meat.

Remove excess fat if necessary.

Step 3: Prepare the Tomato Sauce

In another pan, combine:

  • Tomato sauce
  • Tomato paste
  • Oregano
  • Sugar (optional)

Simmer the sauce for 10–15 minutes on low heat.

A slow simmer allows the tomatoes to develop a deeper flavor and removes the raw taste.

Add fresh basil at the end for a brighter aroma.

Step 4: Combine the Filling

Allow the cooked beef mixture to cool slightly.

Mix the beef with ricotta cheese if you want a creamy filling.

Add a small amount of Parmesan cheese for extra richness.

The filling should be thick enough to stay inside the shells without leaking.
