Pecan Pie Muffins: A Sweet, Buttery Muffin Recipe with Classic Pecan Pie Flavor
Pecan Pie Muffins are rich, soft, and full of warm caramel-like flavor. They combine the taste of classic pecan pie with the easy shape of a muffin. Instead of making a full pie crust and filling, this recipe turns the same sweet, nutty flavor into small handheld treats that are perfect for breakfast, brunch, dessert, holidays, bake sales, or afternoon coffee.
These muffins are tender in the center, slightly crisp around the edges, and packed with chopped pecans. Brown sugar gives them a deep caramel taste, butter makes them rich, and the pecans add a delicious crunch. They are simple to make, but they taste special enough for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any cozy family gathering.
Why Pecan Pie Muffins Are So Delicious
The best part of pecan pie muffins is their texture. They are not exactly like regular fluffy muffins, and they are not exactly like pie. They sit somewhere in between. The inside is soft, moist, and slightly gooey, while the outside becomes golden and lightly chewy.
The brown sugar and butter create a flavor similar to pecan pie filling. The pecans toast as the muffins bake, giving every bite a warm, nutty taste. This makes the muffins rich without needing frosting, glaze, or complicated decoration.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 cup chopped pecans
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon baking powder, optional for a slightly lighter texture
Optional Additions
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
- ¼ cup mini chocolate chips
- A pinch of nutmeg
- Extra pecans for topping
Step 1: Prepare the Muffin Pan
Preheat your oven to 350°F / 175°C.
Grease a muffin pan very well with butter or non-stick spray. You can also use paper muffin liners, but these muffins can be sticky because of the brown sugar and butter. If using liners, lightly spray the inside of each liner to help the muffins release more easily.
This recipe usually makes about 9 to 12 muffins, depending on how full you fill each cup.
Step 2: Chop the Pecans
Place the pecans on a cutting board and chop them into small pieces.
Do not chop them too finely. You want some texture in the muffins. Small and medium pieces work best because they spread evenly through the batter while still giving a crunchy bite.
For deeper flavor, you can toast the pecans before adding them. Place them in a dry skillet over medium-low heat for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring often, until they smell fragrant. Let them cool before mixing them into the batter.
Step 3: Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a medium mixing bowl, combine the chopped pecans, brown sugar, flour, salt, and baking powder if using.
Stir everything together until the pecans are coated with the flour and sugar mixture.
Coating the pecans helps them stay evenly distributed in the batter instead of sinking to the bottom.
If you want a warmer flavor, add cinnamon at this stage.
Step 4: Mix the Wet Ingredients
In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs until smooth.
Add the melted butter and vanilla extract. Whisk again until the mixture is fully combined.
Make sure the melted butter is not too hot before adding it to the eggs. If the butter is very hot, it can begin to cook the eggs and create small lumps.
The wet mixture should look glossy and smooth.
