Ingredients You’ll Need

For the Beef Layer:

  • 1½ pounds ground beef (or thinly sliced sirloin)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (if using sliced steak)
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

For the Creamy Base:

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning (optional)

For the Topping:

  • 1½ to 2 cups shredded provolone or mozzarella cheese
  • Optional: sliced provolone cheese for a traditional touch

Step-by-Step Method

Step 1: Prepare the Vegetables

Start by washing and slicing your onions and bell peppers into thin strips. Thin slices are important because they soften beautifully and blend well with the beef mixture.

Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add a small amount of olive oil. Once hot, add the onions and peppers. Sauté them for about 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they become soft and slightly caramelized. Add the minced garlic during the last minute of cooking to prevent burning.

Once done, remove the vegetables from the skillet and set them aside.


Step 2: Cook the Beef

In the same skillet, add the ground beef (or thinly sliced steak if you prefer a more authentic texture). Cook over medium heat, breaking up the beef as it browns.

If using sliced steak, cook quickly over medium-high heat until just browned—this only takes a few minutes.

Drain excess grease if necessary. Then season the meat with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well to evenly distribute the flavors.


Step 3: Create the Creamy Mixture

Lower the heat slightly. Add the softened cream cheese to the cooked beef and stir until it begins to melt. Pour in the sour cream and beef broth, mixing continuously until the mixture becomes smooth and creamy.
