Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes: A Cheesy, Savory Twist on Two Classic Favorites

If you love the rich, savory flavors of a classic Philly cheesesteak and the comforting simplicity of sloppy joes, this recipe brings the best of both worlds together. Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes combine seasoned ground beef, sautéed peppers and onions, a flavorful sauce, and melty cheese piled onto soft toasted buns. The result is a hearty, satisfying sandwich that’s perfect for weeknight dinners, game days, or casual gatherings.

This dish captures the essence of the famous Philadelphia sandwich while keeping the quick and easy preparation that sloppy joes are known for. With simple ingredients and a straightforward cooking method, you can create a delicious meal in under 30 minutes.

Ingredients

To make about 4 servings, you will need:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely diced
  • 1 small green bell pepper, finely diced
  • 1 cup mushrooms, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 4 slices provolone cheese (or mozzarella if preferred)
  • 4 hamburger buns, lightly toasted

Optional toppings:

  • Extra sautéed onions
  • Jalapeños for heat
  • A little mayonnaise or garlic aioli

Step 1: Prepare the Vegetables

Start by finely chopping the onion, bell pepper, and mushrooms. Keeping the vegetables small helps them blend smoothly into the beef mixture, creating a texture that resembles the filling of a classic sloppy joe while still maintaining the flavors of a cheesesteak.

Mince the garlic and set all the ingredients aside so they are ready to cook.

Step 2: Brown the Ground Beef

Place a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook it while breaking it apart with a spatula. Continue cooking for about 5–7 minutes, or until the meat is fully browned.

If the beef releases excess grease, carefully drain most of it from the pan. Leave a small amount to help cook the vegetables and add flavor.

Transfer the browned beef to a plate and set it aside temporarily.
