Salted Caramel Pretzel Bars
If you love the irresistible combination of sweet and salty, these Salted Caramel Pretzel Bars are the kind of dessert that disappears quickly. They bring together a buttery, crunchy pretzel base, a thick layer of silky caramel, and a smooth chocolate topping finished with a delicate sprinkle of flaky sea salt.
The best part is the contrast in every bite. The pretzels provide a satisfying crunch, the caramel is rich and chewy, and the chocolate adds just enough sweetness to balance the saltiness. They look impressive enough for a party but are simple enough to make for an afternoon treat.
Why You’ll Love These Salted Caramel Pretzel Bars
These bars are especially convenient because they can be prepared ahead of time and chilled until you’re ready to serve them. You don’t need any complicated decorating skills, and the layers create a beautiful finished dessert all on their own.
They’re perfect for holiday cookie trays, potlucks, bake sales, birthday gatherings, or simply when you’re craving something sweet with a salty twist.
Ingredients
For the Pretzel Base
- 3 cups mini pretzels
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
For the Caramel Layer
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1/3 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
For the Chocolate Topping
- 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil or coconut oil
- Flaky sea salt, for finishing
Step-by-Step Method
Step 1: Prepare the Pan
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Line a 9-by-13-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving some extra parchment hanging over the sides. This makes it much easier to lift the chilled bars from the pan later.
Lightly grease the parchment if desired.
Step 2: Make the Pretzel Base
Place the pretzels in a food processor and pulse until they become fine crumbs. You can leave a few tiny pieces slightly larger for extra texture.
Transfer the crumbs to a bowl and add the melted butter, brown sugar, vanilla extract, and a small pinch of salt.
Mix thoroughly until the crumbs are evenly coated and the mixture resembles damp sand.
Step 3: Press the Crust Into the Pan
Pour the pretzel mixture into the prepared pan.
Using the bottom of a measuring cup or a flat spatula, press the mixture firmly and evenly across the entire bottom of the pan.
Take a little extra time with this step. A firmly packed crust will hold together much better when the bars are sliced.
