A Classic Skillet Dish Bursting with Comfort and Color
Sausage, Peppers, and Onions is a timeless, hearty dish that brings together bold flavors, vibrant vegetables, and satisfying comfort in every bite. Popular in Italian-American kitchens and beloved at family tables, this one-pan meal is simple to prepare yet rich in taste. Whether served in a toasted hoagie roll, over pasta, or alongside crusty bread, this dish is endlessly versatile and always crowd-pleasing.
🧺 Ingredients You’ll Need
- 1½–2 pounds Italian sausage (sweet, mild, or hot)
- 3 bell peppers (a mix of red, green, and yellow), sliced
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
- ½ cup chicken broth or water
- Fresh parsley or basil, chopped (for garnish)
🔪 Step-by-Step Method
Step 1: Brown the Sausages
Heat a large skillet or deep pan over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Place the sausages in the pan and cook, turning occasionally, until they are evenly browned on all sides. This step locks in flavor. Once browned, remove the sausages and set them aside. They do not need to be fully cooked yet.
Step 2: Sauté the Onions
In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of olive oil. Add the sliced onions and cook over medium heat, stirring often. Let them soften and begin to caramelize, about 5–7 minutes. This brings out their natural sweetness and builds the base flavor of the dish.
Step 3: Add Peppers and Garlic
Add the sliced bell peppers to the pan with the onions. Stir well and cook for about 4–5 minutes until the peppers start to soften but still hold their shape. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds, just until fragrant.
