30-Minute Seven-Layer Salad

A Colorful, Classic Dish Perfect for Gatherings

The Seven-Layer Salad is a timeless dish that has been popular at potlucks, family gatherings, and holiday dinners for generations. Known for its vibrant layers and creamy dressing, this salad combines crisp vegetables, savory bacon, shredded cheese, and a rich dressing that ties everything together beautifully. One of the best things about this recipe is how quickly it can be assembled—in about 30 minutes—while still looking impressive and tasting delicious.

Served in a clear bowl to showcase its colorful layers, this salad is as visually appealing as it is flavorful. Each layer adds a different texture and taste, from crunchy lettuce and sweet peas to smoky bacon and tangy dressing.

Below is a detailed step-by-step guide to making this classic dish.

Ingredients

For the Salad Layers

  • 1 large head iceberg lettuce, chopped
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1 cup cucumber, diced
  • 1 cup frozen green peas, thawed
  • ½ cup red onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 6–8 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled

For the Dressing

  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Vegetables

Start by washing all the fresh vegetables thoroughly. Chop the iceberg lettuce into bite-size pieces and pat it dry with a paper towel. Dry lettuce is important because excess moisture can make the salad watery.

Next, slice the cherry tomatoes in half, dice the cucumber, and finely chop the red onion. If using frozen peas, place them in a bowl of cold water for a few minutes to thaw, then drain well.

Set all the prepared ingredients aside.

Step 2: Cook and Crumble the Bacon

Place the bacon slices in a skillet over medium heat and cook until they become crisp. Once cooked, transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to remove excess grease.

After the bacon cools slightly, crumble it into small pieces. This will become one of the final layers and adds a smoky, salty flavor to the salad.

Step 3: Prepare the Creamy Dressing

In a medium mixing bowl, combine the mayonnaise, sour cream, sugar, and apple cider vinegar.

Whisk the mixture until smooth and creamy. Season with a pinch of salt and black pepper to taste. The dressing should be slightly tangy and creamy, balancing the freshness of the vegetables.

Set the dressing aside while you assemble the salad layers.
