My Grandma’s Easter Apple Dumplings: The 4-Ingredient Treat Everyone Fights Over
Some recipes are complicated, full of long ingredient lists and precise techniques. But the recipes that truly stay in families for generations are often the simplest ones. My grandma’s Easter apple dumplings are the perfect example. Every year when Easter came around, the smell of warm baked apples and buttery pastry would fill her kitchen, and before the pan even cooled, everyone would already be arguing over the last dumpling.
What makes this dessert so special isn’t just the comforting flavor—it’s how incredibly simple it is. With only four ingredients, you can create a dessert that tastes like it came straight from a cozy country kitchen. The apples become soft and sweet, the dough turns golden and flaky, and the sugary syrup forms a delicious caramel-like sauce that coats every bite.
Below is the step-by-step method to recreate this beloved family treat.
Ingredients (Only 4!)
To make Grandma’s famous dumplings, you only need:
- 2 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work best)
- 1 can refrigerated crescent roll dough
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup lemon-lime soda (such as Sprite or 7UP)
Optional but recommended:
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon for extra warmth and flavor
Step 1: Prepare the Apples
Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Peel the apples carefully, removing all the skin so the fruit becomes tender when baked. Next, cut each apple into 8 wedges and remove the core.
You should now have 16 apple slices ready to be wrapped in dough.
Tip: If you want slightly tart dumplings, use Granny Smith apples. If you prefer sweeter dumplings, Honeycrisp apples are perfect.
Step 2: Separate the Dough
Open the crescent roll dough and gently unroll it onto a clean surface.
Separate the dough along the perforated lines to create 8 triangles. If your apples are smaller, you can even cut the triangles in half to make more dumplings.
The soft dough will wrap around the apples and bake into a buttery, golden crust.
Step 3: Wrap the Apple Slices
Take one apple slice and place it on the wide end of a crescent roll triangle.
Carefully roll the dough around the apple slice, starting from the wide end and rolling toward the pointed tip.
Make sure the apple is mostly covered by dough so it stays moist while baking.
Place each wrapped apple dumpling into a buttered baking dish, leaving a little space between each one.
