My Grandma’s Easter Apple Dumplings: The 4-Ingredient Treat Everyone Fights Over

Step 4: Sprinkle the Sugar

Once all the apple slices are wrapped and arranged in the baking dish, sprinkle the 1 cup of sugar evenly over the dumplings.

At first it may look like too much sugar, but during baking it melts and mixes with the soda to create a sweet syrup that coats the dumplings beautifully.

If you like warm spice flavors, sprinkle a little cinnamon over the top at this stage.

Step 5: Pour the Soda

Now slowly pour 1 cup of lemon-lime soda around the dumplings. Be careful not to pour directly on top of the dough—pouring it around the edges helps keep the dough flaky.

The soda may seem unusual in a dessert recipe, but it’s actually Grandma’s secret trick. As it bakes, the soda combines with the sugar and apple juices to create a rich, caramel-like sauce.

Step 6: Bake the Dumplings

Place the baking dish into your preheated oven and bake for 35–40 minutes.

During baking you’ll notice:

  • The dough becoming golden brown
  • The apples turning soft and tender
  • The sugar and soda forming a bubbling syrup

Your kitchen will start to smell incredible at this point—just like Grandma’s house on Easter morning.

Step 7: Serve Warm

Once the dumplings are golden and the sauce is bubbling, remove the dish from the oven and allow it to cool for about 5–10 minutes.

Serve the dumplings warm with a spoonful of the sweet syrup from the pan.

For an extra treat, you can add:

  • A scoop of vanilla ice cream
  • Fresh whipped cream
  • A light sprinkle of cinnamon
