Classic Patty Melt Recipe
A timeless diner favorite with crispy bread, juicy beef, and melty cheese
There’s something undeniably comforting about a classic patty melt. Sitting somewhere between a burger and a grilled cheese sandwich, this dish combines seasoned ground beef, caramelized onions, gooey cheese, and buttery toasted bread into one irresistible bite. It’s simple, satisfying, and packed with rich flavor.
Here’s a detailed, step-by-step guide to making the perfect patty melt at home.
Ingredients
For the patties:
- 450g (1 lb) ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
- Salt and black pepper (to taste)
For the onions:
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- Pinch of salt
For the sandwich:
- 8 slices of rye bread (or sourdough if preferred)
- 4–8 slices of Swiss cheese (or cheddar for variation)
- 2–3 tablespoons butter (for grilling)
Optional sauce:
- 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 teaspoon mustard
Step 1: Caramelize the Onions
Start with the onions, since they take the longest.
- Heat a skillet over medium-low heat and add 2 tablespoons of butter.
- Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt.
- Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for about 20–30 minutes.
- The onions should become soft, golden brown, and slightly sweet.
Tip: Don’t rush this step—slow cooking brings out the natural sweetness and depth of flavor.
Step 2: Prepare the Beef Patties
- Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions.
- Shape each into a thin oval or square patty (slightly larger than your bread slices, as they will shrink).
- Season both sides with salt and pepper.
Why thin patties? Patty melts are meant to be sandwich-style, so thinner patties fit better and cook evenly.
Step 3: Cook the Patties
- Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.
- Cook each patty for about 3–4 minutes per side.
- Once cooked through, remove from heat and set aside.
You can place a slice of cheese on each patty during the last minute to start melting it.
