Ground Beef Casserole: A Hearty, Comforting One-Dish Meal
Ground beef casserole is one of those classic comfort foods that shows up in many homes because it’s simple, filling, and flexible. It usually combines seasoned ground beef, pasta or potatoes, a rich sauce, and melted cheese baked together until everything is warm and slightly crispy on top. It’s also a great “use what you have” recipe, which makes it perfect for busy days.
Below is a clear, step-by-step guide to making a delicious ground beef casserole from scratch.
Ingredients (Basic Version)
You can adjust these based on what you have:
- 500g (about 1 lb) ground beef
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 2–3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 can (400g) tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste (optional, for richer flavor)
- 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon paprika or Italian seasoning
- 2 cups cooked pasta (penne, macaroni, or elbow pasta work well)
- 1 to 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a mix)
- 1 tablespoon cooking oil
Optional add-ins:
- Corn, peas, or bell peppers
- Mushrooms
- A splash of cream or milk for a creamier texture
Step-by-Step Method
1. Prepare your ingredients
Start by chopping the onion and garlic. If you’re using pasta, cook it in salted water until it is just al dente (slightly firm). Drain and set aside.
2. Cook the ground beef
Heat a large pan over medium heat and add the cooking oil.
Add the chopped onions and cook for about 2–3 minutes until soft and slightly golden.
Add the ground beef and break it apart with a spoon. Cook until it is fully browned and no longer pink. This usually takes about 6–8 minutes.
If there is excess fat, carefully drain it off.
3. Add seasoning and sauce
Once the beef is cooked:
- Add the garlic and stir for about 30 seconds until fragrant
- Add salt, pepper, and paprika or Italian seasoning
- Stir in the tomato sauce and tomato paste
Let everything simmer for about 5–10 minutes so the flavors blend together and the sauce thickens slightly.
4. Combine with pasta
In a large mixing bowl (or directly in the pan if it’s big enough), mix the cooked pasta with the beef sauce.
Stir until the pasta is fully coated and evenly mixed.
At this point, you can also add vegetables like corn, peas, or mushrooms if you want more texture and nutrition.
