A cabbage casserole is a simple, hearty baked dish that turns an everyday vegetable like Cabbage into something rich, tender, and deeply flavorful. It’s popular in many home kitchens because it’s budget-friendly, flexible, and works as either a main dish or a side.

The idea behind a casserole is straightforward: you layer or mix ingredients in a baking dish, then cook them slowly in the oven so everything blends together. In this case, cabbage softens, absorbs seasoning, and becomes the comforting base of the dish.

Ingredients You’ll Need

A classic cabbage casserole can be made with basic pantry ingredients:

  • 1 medium head of cabbage (chopped)
  • 1 medium onion (diced)
  • 2–3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 tablespoons butter or oil
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar works well)
  • 1 cup milk or cream
  • 2 eggs (optional, for binding)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional add-ins: ground meat, mushrooms, carrots, paprika, or breadcrumbs for topping

Step-by-Step Method

1. Prepare the cabbage

Start by washing and chopping the cabbage into bite-sized pieces. Remove the tough core. Boil or steam it for about 5–7 minutes until slightly tender. You don’t want it fully soft yet, because it will continue cooking in the oven. Drain well to remove excess moisture.

2. Cook the aromatics

In a pan, heat butter or oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook until it becomes soft and lightly golden. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30–60 seconds. This step builds the flavor base of the casserole.

3. Combine the mixture

In a large bowl, mix the cooked cabbage with the sautéed onions and garlic. Add salt, pepper, and any optional spices you like. If you’re using ground meat, cook it separately and mix it in at this stage.
