Creamy Walnut Pie: A Rich, Nutty Dessert with a Silky Filling
Creamy Walnut Pie is a comforting homemade dessert made with a buttery pie crust, crunchy walnuts, and a smooth custard-like filling. It has the warm flavor of toasted nuts, brown sugar, vanilla, butter, and cream. The texture is what makes this pie special: the top becomes golden and slightly crisp, the walnuts add crunch, and the center stays soft, creamy, and rich.
This pie is perfect for holidays, family dinners, autumn gatherings, Thanksgiving-style meals, or any time you want a dessert that feels classic but a little different from ordinary pecan pie. It is sweet, nutty, creamy, and simple to prepare.
What Makes Creamy Walnut Pie Special?
Unlike a regular nut pie that can be very sticky or overly sweet, this creamy walnut pie has a smoother filling. The cream, eggs, and butter create a soft custard base that holds the walnuts together. The walnuts bring a slightly earthy, toasted flavor that balances the sweetness of the filling.
The result is a pie that tastes rich but not heavy. It can be served plain, with whipped cream, or with vanilla ice cream.
Ingredients
For the Pie Crust
- 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust, homemade or store-bought
- 1 tablespoon flour, for dusting if needed
For the Walnut Filling
- 1 ½ cups chopped walnuts
- 3 large eggs
- ¾ cup brown sugar
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup heavy cream
- ¼ cup melted butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon, optional
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey, optional for extra flavor
For Serving
- Whipped cream
- Vanilla ice cream
- Caramel drizzle
- Extra chopped walnuts
Step 1: Prepare the Pie Crust
Start by preparing a 9-inch pie crust. You can use a homemade crust or a ready-made crust.
Place the crust into a pie dish and gently press it into the bottom and sides. Trim any extra dough around the edges, then crimp the edge with your fingers or a fork.
Place the crust in the refrigerator for 15 to 20 minutes while you prepare the filling. Chilling helps the crust keep its shape during baking.
Step 2: Toast the Walnuts
Preheat the oven to 350°F / 175°C.
Spread the chopped walnuts on a baking tray in a single layer. Toast them in the oven for about 6 to 8 minutes, stirring once halfway through.
The walnuts are ready when they smell warm and nutty.
This step is important because toasted walnuts have a deeper flavor than raw walnuts. Let them cool slightly before adding them to the filling.
Step 3: Mix the Eggs and Sugars
In a large mixing bowl, add the eggs, brown sugar, and granulated sugar.
Whisk until the mixture becomes smooth and slightly thick.
Brown sugar gives the pie a caramel-like flavor, while granulated sugar adds sweetness and helps the filling set properly.
Do not overbeat the eggs. You only need to mix until everything is combined.
