Homemade Take 5 Bars: A Sweet, Salty, Crunchy Candy Bar Recipe

Homemade Take 5 Bars are a delicious copycat-style candy treat made with five classic layers: crunchy pretzels, creamy peanut butter, roasted peanuts, chewy caramel, and smooth chocolate. They are sweet, salty, crunchy, chewy, and creamy all at once, which is what makes them so addictive.

This homemade version is perfect for holidays, parties, dessert trays, lunchbox treats, or anytime you want a rich candy bar-style snack made in your own kitchen. The recipe is simple, but the result tastes like a bakery candy bar with a beautiful balance of flavors and textures.

What Makes Homemade Take 5 Bars Special?

The magic of these bars comes from the contrast. The pretzels give crunch and saltiness, the peanut butter adds creaminess, the peanuts bring a nutty bite, the caramel gives chewiness, and the chocolate wraps everything in a smooth sweet coating.

Instead of making individual candy bars one by one, this recipe is made in a pan and then sliced into bars or squares. That makes it easier, cleaner, and faster.

Ingredients

For the Base

  • 3 to 4 cups mini pretzels
  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar, optional
  • 1 cup roasted salted peanuts

For the Caramel Layer

  • 1 ½ cups soft caramel candies
  • 3 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • ¼ teaspoon salt, optional

For the Chocolate Topping

  • 2 cups milk chocolate chips or semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil or butter
  • Extra crushed pretzels or peanuts for topping, optional

Step 1: Prepare the Pan

Line an 8×8 inch or 9×9 inch baking pan with parchment paper. Leave some parchment hanging over the sides so you can lift the bars out easily later.

Lightly grease the parchment with butter or non-stick spray. This helps prevent the caramel and chocolate from sticking.

A square pan gives thicker bars, while a larger pan creates thinner bars.

Step 2: Make the Pretzel Base

Arrange the mini pretzels in an even layer on the bottom of the pan. Try to cover as much of the surface as possible.

You can use whole mini pretzels for a stronger crunch, or lightly crush them if you want a more compact base.

The pretzels are important because they give the bars their salty crunch and keep the dessert from tasting too sweet.

Step 3: Prepare the Peanut Butter Layer

In a small bowl, mix the peanut butter with melted butter. If you want a slightly thicker and sweeter peanut butter layer, add powdered sugar.

Stir until smooth.

Spread the peanut butter mixture carefully over the pretzels. Use a spoon or spatula and work slowly so the pretzels do not move too much.

The peanut butter acts like a creamy glue that holds the pretzel layer together.
