Baked Philly Cheesesteak Sandwiches: A Cheesy, Savory Step-by-Step Recipe
Baked Philly Cheesesteak Sandwiches are warm, juicy, cheesy sandwiches filled with thinly sliced beef, sautéed onions, peppers, mushrooms, and melted cheese, then baked until the bread is lightly crisp and the filling is hot and gooey. This recipe is perfect when you want the flavor of a classic Philly cheesesteak but in an easy oven-baked version that can feed a family or a group.
Instead of making one sandwich at a time on the stove, the filling is cooked first, loaded into rolls, topped with cheese, and baked together. The result is a tray of golden, melty, satisfying sandwiches that are great for dinner, parties, game nights, or casual weekend meals.
What Makes Baked Philly Cheesesteak Sandwiches Special?
The best part of a Philly cheesesteak is the combination of tender beef, sweet onions, melted cheese, and soft bread. Baking the sandwiches takes that idea and makes it even easier. The oven melts the cheese evenly, warms the bread, and brings all the flavors together.
The filling should be juicy but not watery. The bread should be soft inside but slightly toasted outside. The cheese should melt into the beef so every bite is rich, savory, and comforting.
Ingredients
For the Beef Filling
- 1 ½ pounds thinly sliced steak, such as ribeye, sirloin, or shaved beef
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced, optional
- 1 cup mushrooms, sliced, optional
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon paprika
For the Sandwiches
- 6 hoagie rolls, sub rolls, or soft sandwich rolls
- 10 to 12 slices provolone cheese
- ½ cup shredded mozzarella, optional for extra meltiness
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon chopped parsley, optional
Step 1: Choose and Slice the Beef
For the best cheesesteak texture, use thinly sliced beef. Ribeye is the classic choice because it is tender and flavorful, but sirloin or pre-shaved beef also works well.
If slicing the meat yourself, place the steak in the freezer for about 20 to 30 minutes first. This firms it up and makes it easier to cut into thin slices.
Slice the beef against the grain. This helps the meat stay tender after cooking.
Step 2: Prepare the Vegetables
Slice the onion and bell peppers into thin strips. If using mushrooms, slice them thinly as well.
Thin vegetables cook faster and blend better with the beef. The goal is for the onions and peppers to become soft, slightly sweet, and flavorful without staying too crunchy.
Set the vegetables aside while you heat the pan.
Step 3: Cook the Onions and Peppers
Place a large skillet over medium heat. Add olive oil and butter.
When the butter melts, add the sliced onions and peppers. Cook for about 6 to 8 minutes, stirring often, until they become soft and lightly golden.
Add the mushrooms if using, and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes until they release their moisture and become tender.
Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Garlic burns quickly, so stir it gently and do not cook it too long.
Remove the vegetables from the skillet and place them on a plate.
