Walnut Cream Pie: A Rich and Creamy Dessert with a Buttery Crust and Nutty Flavor

Walnut Cream Pie is a classic homemade dessert that combines a crisp buttery crust, a smooth creamy filling, and the rich flavor of toasted walnuts. It is a perfect balance of sweetness, creaminess, and crunch, making it an elegant choice for holidays, family gatherings, dinner parties, or a special weekend treat.

Unlike traditional nut pies that rely on a dense syrup filling, Walnut Cream Pie has a lighter and silkier texture. The creamy filling allows the natural flavor of walnuts to shine while creating a dessert that feels luxurious but comforting.

This pie is especially delicious when served chilled, allowing the flavors to blend and the filling to become perfectly set.

Why Walnut Cream Pie Is So Special

The secret to a great Walnut Cream Pie is the contrast between textures:

  • The buttery crust provides a crisp and slightly sweet foundation.
  • The cream filling creates a smooth, melt-in-your-mouth texture.
  • The walnuts add a toasted, nutty flavor and a satisfying crunch.

Toasting the walnuts before adding them enhances their natural oils and gives the pie a deeper, richer taste.

Ingredients

For the Pie Crust

  • 1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 3–4 tablespoons ice water

(You can also use a prepared graham cracker crust or refrigerated pie crust.)

For the Walnut Cream Filling

  • 1 ½ cups chopped walnuts
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • ¾ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon, optional
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

For the Topping

  • 1 cup whipped cream
  • Extra toasted walnuts
  • Caramel sauce, optional
  • A sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg

Step 1: Prepare the Pie Crust

Begin by preparing the crust.

In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt.

Add the cold butter pieces and use a pastry cutter or your fingertips to mix until the flour resembles coarse crumbs. Small pieces of butter should remain visible because they create flaky layers during baking.

Slowly add the ice water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing gently until the dough starts coming together.

Do not overmix the dough. Too much handling can make the crust tough instead of tender.

Shape the dough into a disk, wrap it, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Step 2: Roll and Bake the Crust

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

Lightly flour your work surface and roll the chilled dough into a circle slightly larger than your pie dish.

Carefully transfer the dough into a 9-inch pie pan.

Press the dough gently into the bottom and sides of the dish. Trim any extra dough around the edges and create a decorative border if desired.

Prick the bottom of the crust with a fork to prevent bubbling.

Line the crust with parchment paper and fill it with pie weights, dried beans, or rice.

Bake for about 15 minutes, then remove the weights and bake for another 8–10 minutes until lightly golden.

Allow the crust to cool completely before adding the filling.

Step 3: Toast the Walnuts

Place the chopped walnuts in a dry skillet over medium heat.

Toast them for 3–5 minutes, stirring frequently.

The walnuts are ready when they become fragrant and slightly darker in color.

Be careful not to burn them because nuts can quickly turn bitter when overheated.

Allow the walnuts to cool before adding them to the filling.

Toasting gives the pie a much stronger walnut flavor and a more enjoyable crunch.
