Salted Caramel Crackle: A Sweet and Crunchy Homemade Treat

Salted Caramel Crackle is a delightful dessert that combines the deep, buttery richness of caramel with a satisfying crisp texture and a touch of sea salt. This irresistible treat sits somewhere between homemade candy, caramel bark, and a crunchy snack. The contrast between the sweet caramel coating and the sharp flavor of salt creates a perfectly balanced bite.

Whether served during holidays, prepared as a homemade gift, or enjoyed with coffee and tea, Salted Caramel Crackle is a simple recipe that transforms everyday ingredients into something elegant and addictive.

The secret behind its delicious texture is the careful cooking of caramel until it reaches the right temperature, creating a thin, glass-like crackle that breaks beautifully when cooled.

What Makes Salted Caramel Crackle Special?

The magic of this dessert comes from the combination of:

  • Caramelized sugar – creates a deep golden sweetness.
  • Butter – adds richness and a smooth flavor.
  • Vanilla – enhances the caramel aroma.
  • Sea salt – balances sweetness and creates a gourmet taste.
  • Crunchy base – provides texture and makes every bite satisfying.

The result is a treat with a crisp snap, buttery caramel flavor, and a slightly salty finish.

Ingredients

For the Crackle Base

  • 2 cups saltine crackers or thin crispy biscuits
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar (light or dark)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (optional: pecans, almonds, or walnuts)

Optional Chocolate Layer

  • 1½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ teaspoon flaky sea salt for topping

Step 1: Prepare the Baking Tray

Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).

Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil.

Arrange the crackers in a single layer across the tray, making sure they touch each other but do not overlap.

This creates the crunchy foundation that will hold the caramel coating.

Step 2: Make the Caramel Mixture

Place a medium saucepan over medium heat.

Add:

  • Butter
  • Brown sugar

Stir gently as the butter melts and combines with the sugar.

Continue heating until the mixture begins to bubble.

Once it starts boiling, allow it to cook for about 3–5 minutes, stirring continuously.

The caramel should become smooth, glossy, and slightly thickened.

Be careful not to overcook it because burnt caramel develops a bitter flavor.

Step 3: Add Flavoring

Remove the saucepan from heat.

Immediately stir in:

  • Vanilla extract
  • Sea salt

The mixture may bubble slightly when vanilla is added, so stir carefully.

The salt enhances the caramel flavor and prevents the dessert from becoming overly sweet.
