Ground Beef and Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes: A Comforting Homemade Classic
Few meals capture the feeling of home quite like a warm plate of ground beef and gravy served over a generous portion of creamy mashed potatoes. This dish combines simple, affordable ingredients into something deeply satisfying: savory seasoned beef, a rich homemade gravy, and smooth potatoes that soak up every delicious bite. It is the kind of recipe that feels familiar and nostalgic while still being easy enough to prepare on a busy evening.
Unlike complicated dishes that require special techniques or expensive ingredients, ground beef and gravy over mashed potatoes relies on careful seasoning, proper cooking methods, and a little patience to create layers of flavor. The secret is building the gravy slowly so it becomes rich and silky, while preparing mashed potatoes that are light, creamy, and perfectly seasoned.
Ingredients
For the Mashed Potatoes:
- 2 pounds potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes work well)
- ½ cup warm milk
- 4 tablespoons butter
- ½ cup sour cream or cream cheese (optional for extra creaminess)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
For the Ground Beef and Gravy:
- 1½ pounds ground beef
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 3 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon butter or oil for cooking
- Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes
Begin by washing, peeling, and cutting the potatoes into evenly sized chunks. Cutting them into similar pieces helps them cook at the same rate, preventing some pieces from becoming overcooked while others remain firm.
Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover them with cold water. Add a generous pinch of salt, then bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat slightly and cook for about 15–20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender enough to easily break apart when pierced with a fork.
Drain the potatoes well. Allowing excess water to evaporate for a minute or two helps create creamier mashed potatoes instead of watery ones.
Mash the potatoes while they are still warm. Add butter first so it melts smoothly into the potatoes, followed by warm milk and sour cream if using. Season with salt and pepper, then mix until creamy and smooth. Avoid overmixing, as too much stirring can make mashed potatoes sticky.
Cover the potatoes and keep them warm while preparing the beef and gravy.
Step 2: Brown the Ground Beef
Heat a large skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat. Add a small amount of butter or oil, then add the ground beef.
Break the beef apart with a wooden spoon as it cooks. Allow it to brown properly instead of immediately stirring constantly. Browning creates deeper flavor because the meat develops caramelized edges that add richness to the final dish.
Cook the beef until it is no longer pink. If there is a large amount of excess grease, carefully remove some of it, leaving enough fat in the pan to help flavor the gravy.
