Slow Cooker Cheesy Smashed Potatoes: A Creamy, Comforting Side Dish

There is something wonderfully comforting about a bowl of warm, cheesy potatoes. Slow Cooker Cheesy Smashed Potatoes take that familiar comfort food and make it even easier by letting the slow cooker do most of the work. The potatoes become tender and flavorful over several hours, then are gently smashed with butter, cream, and plenty of melted cheese.

Unlike traditional mashed potatoes, smashed potatoes are intentionally left a little rustic. Small pieces of potato remain throughout the mixture, giving the dish a hearty texture while the cheese creates a rich, creamy finish. It is an especially convenient side dish for family dinners, holidays, potlucks, and occasions when you want to keep the stovetop free for other cooking.

Why You’ll Love These Slow Cooker Cheesy Smashed Potatoes

This recipe is designed around simplicity without sacrificing flavor.

  • Minimal hands-on cooking: The slow cooker handles the main cooking process.
  • Rustic texture: The potatoes are smashed rather than completely puréed.
  • Rich and cheesy: Butter, cream, and cheese create a luxurious consistency.
  • Easy to customize: You can change the cheese, seasonings, or toppings.
  • Excellent for gatherings: The potatoes can stay warm in the slow cooker until serving.
  • Comfort-food appeal: They pair beautifully with roasted meats, vegetables, and hearty main dishes.

Ingredients You’ll Need

For approximately 6 servings:

  • 2½ pounds Yukon Gold or yellow potatoes
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ¾ cup chicken or vegetable broth
  • ½ cup heavy cream or half-and-half
  • 1½ cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley or chives

Optional additions

For extra flavor, consider adding:

  • A little smoked paprika
  • Cooked, crumbled turkey bacon
  • Sautéed onions
  • Chopped green onions
  • A small amount of Parmesan
  • A pinch of dried thyme
  • Extra cheddar on top for serving

Choosing the Right Potatoes

The type of potato makes a noticeable difference.

Yukon Gold potatoes are an excellent choice because they naturally have a buttery texture and become creamy when smashed. Their thin skins can also be left on if you enjoy a more rustic finish.

Russet potatoes can also be used and produce a lighter, fluffier result. However, because they contain more starch, avoid aggressively mixing them after cooking, as overworking them can make the potatoes gummy.

For a rustic smashed-potato dish, Yukon Golds are my first choice.

How to Make Slow Cooker Cheesy Smashed Potatoes

Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes

Start by washing the potatoes thoroughly. If you’re using Yukon Gold potatoes, you can leave the skins on for extra texture and color. If you prefer completely smooth potatoes, peel them.

Cut the potatoes into roughly 1½-inch pieces.

Try to keep the pieces relatively similar in size. This helps them cook at approximately the same rate so you don’t end up with some pieces perfectly tender while others remain firm.

Place the cut potatoes directly into the slow cooker.

Step 2: Add the Aromatics and Seasonings

Sprinkle the minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and onion powder over the potatoes.

Pour in the broth and gently toss everything together.

The broth provides moisture while the potatoes cook and helps infuse them with savory flavor. Because the cheese and butter will add richness later, using broth instead of simply adding lots of dairy at the beginning keeps the potatoes from becoming excessively heavy.

Step 3: Add the Butter

Cut the butter into several smaller pieces and distribute them over the potatoes.

You don’t need to stir everything extensively. As the slow cooker heats, the butter will melt and mingle with the broth and potato juices.

Cover the slow cooker with its lid.

Step 4: Slow Cook Until Tender

Cook the potatoes on LOW for approximately 5–6 hours, or on HIGH for approximately 2½–3½ hours.

Cooking times can vary depending on the size of the potato pieces and the slow cooker itself.

The potatoes are ready when a fork slides easily through the largest pieces without resistance.

Avoid relying solely on the clock. The fork test is the best indication of doneness.
