Butter Buttermilk Biscuits Recipe

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. This ensures that the leavening agents and salt are evenly distributed throughout the flour.
  3. Cut in the Butter: Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. The key to flaky biscuits is to ensure the butter remains cold, so work quickly.
  4. Add Buttermilk: Gradually pour in the cold buttermilk, starting with 3/4 cup, and gently stir with a fork or your hands until the dough begins to come together. If the dough seems too dry, add a bit more buttermilk, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough holds together but is not sticky.
  5. Knead the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times to bring it together. Be careful not to overwork the dough, as this can lead to tough biscuits.
  6. Shape and Cut: Pat the dough into a rectangle about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. Use a biscuit cutter or a round glass to cut out biscuits. Press straight down without twisting to ensure the biscuits rise evenly. Gather the scraps and gently pat them out again to cut more biscuits.
  7. Bake: Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, close together if you want soft sides or spaced apart for crispier edges. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown on top.
  8. Serve: Remove the biscuits from the oven and immediately brush the tops with melted butter for an extra layer of flavor. Serve warm with your favorite toppings or enjoy them plain.

Tips:

  • Use Cold Ingredients: Keeping the butter and buttermilk cold ensures that the butter remains in small pieces as it bakes, creating steam and making the biscuits flaky.
  • Don’t Overmix: Handle the dough as little as possible to avoid tough biscuits.
  • Freeze Before Baking: For an even flakier result, place the unbaked biscuits in the freezer for 10-15 minutes before baking.

Enjoy these delicious Butter Buttermilk Biscuits fresh out of the oven for a simple, yet indulgent treat!!
