Beef and Noodles: A Comfort Classic Made Simple

Beef and Noodles is one of those meals that feels like it belongs in a slow Sunday kitchen—warm, filling, and deeply satisfying. It’s the kind of dish that transforms humble ingredients like beef, broth, and noodles into something rich and memorable.

At its core, it’s a combination of tender beef simmered in a savory sauce, then tossed with soft noodles that soak up all the flavor. The beauty of this recipe is its flexibility: it can be rustic and brothy or thick and gravy-like depending on how you cook it.

Ingredients You’ll Need

To make a classic version, you don’t need anything fancy—just simple pantry staples:

  • 1 to 1.5 pounds beef (chuck roast, stew meat, or ground beef)
  • 12 oz egg noodles
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons flour or cornstarch (for thickening)
  • 2 tablespoons butter or oil
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Optional: Worcestershire sauce, paprika, thyme, or mushrooms for extra depth

Step-by-Step Cooking Method

Step 1: Prepare and Brown the Beef

Start by heating a large skillet or heavy pot over medium-high heat. Add butter or oil, then place your beef in the pan.

  • If using ground beef: break it apart and cook until fully browned.
  • If using stew beef: sear each side until a deep brown crust forms.

Browning is important—it builds the base flavor of the entire dish.

Step 2: Build the Aromatic Base

Once the beef is browned, add chopped onions. Cook until they soften and become translucent. Add garlic and stir for about 30 seconds until fragrant.

At this stage, you’re layering flavor—don’t rush it.

Step 3: Create the Sauce

Sprinkle flour over the beef mixture and stir well. This helps thicken the sauce later.

Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps. The liquid should start forming a light gravy.

Add:

  • Salt and pepper
  • A splash of Worcestershire sauce (optional but recommended)

Let the mixture simmer gently for 10–15 minutes. The sauce will deepen in color and flavor.
