Best Chocolate Chip Cookies
There is something timeless about a warm chocolate chip cookie fresh from the oven. The ideal cookie should have slightly crisp edges, a soft and chewy center, plenty of melted chocolate, and a rich buttery flavor that makes it nearly impossible to stop at one.
This chocolate chip cookie recipe is designed to create that perfect balance. The dough is easy to prepare, the ingredients are simple, and a few small techniques make a big difference in the final texture. Whether you’re baking for your family, preparing a dessert for guests, or simply craving a homemade treat, these cookies are a reliable choice.
Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup chopped chocolate or chocolate chunks, optional
Step 1: Prepare the Oven and Baking Sheets
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. This prevents the cookies from sticking and also makes cleanup much easier.
If you prefer cookies with slightly thicker centers, you can chill the prepared dough before baking. Chilling helps reduce spreading and gives the cookies a chewier texture.
Step 2: Cream the Butter and Sugars
Place the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar in a large mixing bowl.
Beat the mixture for about 2–3 minutes until it becomes smooth, creamy, and slightly lighter in color.
This step is important because properly creamed butter and sugar help create the cookie’s texture. Avoid using melted butter here unless you specifically want a flatter, denser cookie.
