Cheesy Baked Meatball Casserole: A Comforting Family Dinner Recipe
Cheesy Baked Meatball Casserole is a hearty, saucy, oven-baked dish made with tender meatballs, rich marinara sauce, pasta, and plenty of melted cheese. It is warm, filling, and perfect for family dinners, potlucks, meal prep, or any night when you want a simple comfort-food meal.
This recipe brings together the flavors of spaghetti and meatballs, baked pasta, and cheesy lasagna-style casseroles in one easy dish. The meatballs are juicy, the sauce is savory, and the cheese melts into a golden, bubbly topping that makes every bite satisfying.
What Makes This Casserole Special?
The best thing about this casserole is that it feels homemade and comforting without being difficult. The meatballs add a rich, savory flavor, while the sauce keeps everything moist. The pasta absorbs some of the tomato flavor as it bakes, and the cheese creates a creamy, stretchy layer on top.
You can make it with homemade meatballs, frozen meatballs, or store-bought cooked meatballs. This makes the recipe flexible depending on how much time you have.
Ingredients
For the Meatballs
- 1 pound ground beef
- ½ pound ground pork, optional
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- ¼ cup grated parmesan cheese
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons chopped parsley
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons milk
For the Casserole
- 12 oz pasta, such as penne, rigatoni, rotini, or ziti
- 3 cups marinara sauce
- 1 cup ricotta cheese, optional
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup grated parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes, optional
- Fresh basil or parsley for garnish
Step 1: Prepare the Meatball Mixture
Start by placing the ground beef and ground pork in a large mixing bowl. Ground pork is optional, but it makes the meatballs softer and more flavorful.
Add breadcrumbs, egg, parmesan cheese, minced garlic, chopped parsley, Italian seasoning, salt, black pepper, and milk.
Mix everything gently with your hands or a spoon. Do not overmix, because overworking the meat can make the meatballs tough. Mix only until the ingredients are evenly combined.
Step 2: Shape the Meatballs
Take small portions of the meat mixture and roll them into balls. Medium-sized meatballs work best for casserole because they cook evenly and are easy to serve.
You should get about 18 to 24 meatballs, depending on size.
Place the shaped meatballs on a tray while you prepare the skillet.
Step 3: Brown the Meatballs
Heat a little oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
Add the meatballs in batches and brown them on all sides. They do not need to be fully cooked at this stage because they will finish baking in the casserole.
Browning the meatballs gives them better flavor and helps them hold their shape in the sauce.
Once browned, transfer the meatballs to a plate.
Step 4: Cook the Pasta
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
Add the pasta and cook it for 2 minutes less than the package instructions. This keeps the pasta slightly firm, so it does not become mushy while baking.
Drain the pasta and set it aside.
Do not rinse the pasta. The starch on the surface helps the sauce stick better.
