Cheesy Beef Hot Dog Buns: A Comforting, Golden-Baked Favorite

There is something wonderfully satisfying about a warm, freshly baked hot dog bun filled with seasoned beef and plenty of melted cheese. These Cheesy Beef Hot Dog Buns turn simple ingredients into a hearty, family-friendly meal that works just as well for a quick dinner as it does for a casual weekend gathering.

Instead of simply placing a hot dog inside a bun, this recipe transforms the bun into a soft, cheesy pocket filled with savory ground beef. The beef is cooked with onions and simple seasonings, then combined with melty cheese before being tucked into the buns and baked until the outside is lightly crisp and the cheese is bubbling.

The result is a combination of soft bread, flavorful beef, gooey cheese, and a beautifully toasted finish in every bite.

Why You’ll Love These Cheesy Beef Hot Dog Buns

This recipe is easy enough for a busy evening but delicious enough to feel like something special.

  • Quick and straightforward: The beef filling comes together in one skillet.
  • Comforting and filling: Beef, bread, and cheese make a satisfying combination.
  • Easy to customize: You can adjust the seasonings, cheese, and toppings.
  • Great for families: The ingredients are familiar and easy to adapt to different tastes.
  • Perfect for leftovers: Extra buns can be refrigerated and reheated later.
  • Oven-baked finish: Baking melts the cheese throughout the filling and gives the buns a delicious golden exterior.

Ingredients

For approximately 6 hot dog buns, you’ll need:

For the Beef Filling

  • 450 g (1 lb) ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon tomato ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil, if needed

For the Cheese Filling

  • 150–180 g (about 1½ cups) shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Using a combination of cheddar and mozzarella gives the buns both a strong cheesy flavor and an especially stretchy, melted texture.

For the Buns

  • 6 soft hot dog buns
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley, optional
  • Extra shredded cheese for topping, optional

Step 1: Prepare the Beef

Start by heating a large skillet over medium heat. Add the cooking oil if your ground beef is particularly lean.

Add the diced onion and cook for approximately 2–3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it begins to soften.

Add the ground beef to the skillet. Break it apart with a wooden spoon or spatula as it cooks. Continue cooking until the beef is thoroughly browned and no longer pink.

If there is a large amount of excess fat in the skillet, carefully drain some of it before continuing.

Step 2: Season the Filling

Add the minced garlic to the cooked beef and stir for about 30 seconds. This short cooking time helps release the garlic’s aroma without allowing it to burn.

Add the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, oregano, salt, and black pepper.

Stir everything together until the beef is evenly coated. Let the mixture cook for another 2–3 minutes so the flavors can blend.

Taste the filling and adjust the seasoning if necessary.

Remove the skillet from the heat and allow the beef to cool for a few minutes.

Step 3: Add the Cheese

Once the beef mixture has cooled slightly, transfer it to a bowl if your skillet is very hot.

Add the shredded cheddar and mozzarella.

Mix gently until the cheese is distributed throughout the beef.

You don’t need to completely melt the cheese at this stage. The oven will take care of that later.

Step 4: Prepare the Hot Dog Buns

Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F).

Carefully open each hot dog bun without cutting completely through the bottom. You want to create a pocket that can hold the beef and cheese mixture.

For an extra-soft interior, avoid flattening the buns too much. Keeping the bread intact around the filling helps prevent the mixture from falling out during baking.

Arrange the prepared buns in a baking dish, leaving them close enough together that they support one another.
