Cheesy Hash Brown Pie: A Crispy, Golden Comfort Food Masterpiece
The Cheesy Hash Brown Pie is a delicious combination of crispy potatoes, rich melted cheese, creamy filling, and comforting homemade flavors. It takes the familiar idea of hash browns and transforms it into a beautiful pie-style dish that can be served for breakfast, brunch, lunch, or even a cozy dinner.
Unlike traditional pies that rely on pastry crust, this recipe uses shredded potatoes to create a naturally crispy golden crust. Inside, a creamy cheese-filled mixture creates a satisfying contrast between the crunchy outside and the soft, flavorful center. It is simple enough for everyday cooking but impressive enough to serve guests.
This dish is highly customizable. You can add vegetables, herbs, bacon, chicken, mushrooms, or different types of cheese depending on your taste. The foundation, however, remains the same: perfectly seasoned potatoes, generous cheese, and a baked texture that makes every bite irresistible.
Ingredients
For the Hash Brown Crust
- 5 medium potatoes (about 1 kg)
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
For the Cheesy Filling
- 3 large eggs
- 200 ml heavy cream or milk
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ cup mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 small bell pepper, diced
- 1 cup cooked vegetables or cooked meat (optional)
- 1 teaspoon dried herbs (oregano, thyme, or parsley)
- Salt and pepper according to taste
Step-by-Step Preparation Method
Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes
Begin by washing and peeling the potatoes. Using a large grater, shred the potatoes into thin strips.
Place the shredded potatoes in a clean kitchen towel and squeeze firmly to remove as much water as possible. This step is extremely important because excess moisture prevents the crust from becoming crispy.
After removing the water, place the potatoes in a bowl and mix them with melted butter, olive oil, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Make sure every potato strand is evenly coated with seasoning.
Step 2: Create the Hash Brown Pie Crust
Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F).
Grease a round pie dish or baking pan with butter or oil.
Spread the seasoned shredded potatoes evenly across the bottom of the dish. Press them firmly with your hands or the back of a spoon to create a compact crust. Push some potatoes slightly up the sides to form the edges of the pie.
Bake the potato crust for 25–30 minutes until it becomes golden and slightly crispy.
Pre-baking the crust helps it maintain its structure and prevents it from becoming soggy after adding the filling.
Step 3: Prepare the Cheesy Filling
While the potato crust is baking, prepare the filling.
In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs and cream or milk until smooth.
Add the shredded cheddar cheese, mozzarella, Parmesan, chopped onion, bell pepper, herbs, salt, and pepper. Mix everything together until all ingredients are evenly combined.
If you want a more filling version, add cooked chicken, bacon, sausage, spinach, mushrooms, or other vegetables at this stage.
