Cherry Cheese Danishes: A Sweet, Flaky Bakery-Style Pastry Recipe

Cherry Cheese Danishes are beautiful pastries made with flaky pastry, creamy sweet cheese filling, and glossy cherry topping. They look like something from a bakery, but they are surprisingly easy to make at home, especially when using ready-made puff pastry or crescent dough.

Each Danish has three delicious parts: a buttery pastry base, a smooth cream cheese center, and a bright cherry fruit topping. When baked, the pastry becomes golden and crisp around the edges, while the cheese filling turns soft and creamy. The cherry topping adds sweetness, color, and a slightly tart fruit flavor that balances the richness of the cream cheese.

These pastries are perfect for breakfast, brunch, dessert, holidays, tea time, or special family gatherings.

Ingredients

For the Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 egg, for egg wash
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 tablespoon flour, for dusting

For the Cream Cheese Filling

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest, optional
  • 1 egg yolk

For the Cherry Topping

  • ¾ cup cherry pie filling
  • ¼ teaspoon almond extract, optional
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice, optional

For the Glaze

  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Step 1: Prepare the Puff Pastry

Start by thawing the puff pastry according to the package instructions. It should be cold but flexible. Do not let it become too warm, because warm puff pastry can become sticky and may not rise properly.

Lightly dust your work surface with flour. Place the puff pastry sheet on the surface and gently roll it out to smooth the folds.

Cut the pastry into equal squares or rectangles. For medium-sized Danishes, cut one sheet into 6 pieces. For smaller pastries, cut it into 9 pieces.

Step 2: Shape the Danish Pastry

Place the pastry pieces on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Use a small knife to lightly score a border around each pastry, about ½ inch from the edge. Do not cut all the way through. This border helps the edges puff up while keeping the filling in the center.

Using a fork, prick the middle area of each pastry a few times. This prevents the center from rising too much and creates space for the cream cheese and cherry topping.

Step 3: Make the Cream Cheese Filling

In a mixing bowl, add the softened cream cheese, sugar, vanilla extract, lemon juice, lemon zest, and egg yolk.

Mix until smooth and creamy. The filling should be thick, soft, and easy to spread.

The cream cheese must be softened before mixing. Cold cream cheese can leave lumps in the filling.

Lemon juice helps balance the sweetness, while vanilla gives the filling a warm bakery-style flavor.

Step 4: Prepare the Cherry Topping

Place the cherry pie filling in a small bowl.

For a brighter flavor, stir in a little lemon juice. For a deeper bakery-style flavor, add a small drop of almond extract.

Do not add too much almond extract because it has a strong flavor. A small amount is enough to make the cherries taste richer.

Step 5: Add the Cream Cheese Filling

Spoon about 1 to 2 tablespoons of cream cheese filling into the center of each pastry.

Spread it gently inside the scored border. Try not to spread the filling all the way to the edges, because the pastry edges need room to rise.

Keep the filling slightly thicker in the center for a creamy bite.
