Crispy Cheddar Cheese Sticks: A Golden, Cheesy Snack Everyone Will Love
There is something irresistible about a snack that combines a crisp, golden exterior with plenty of savory cheese. Crispy Cheddar Cheese Sticks are exactly that kind of treat. They are crunchy, buttery, wonderfully cheesy, and easy enough to prepare for an afternoon snack, party appetizer, or cozy movie-night bite.
These cheese sticks are made with a simple dough enriched with sharp cheddar cheese and a few pantry staples. Once baked, the edges become beautifully crisp while the cheese develops a rich, toasted flavor. They are delicious on their own, but you can also serve them alongside marinara sauce, ranch dressing, tomato soup, or your favorite dip.
Why You’ll Love These Cheddar Cheese Sticks
This recipe is especially appealing because it doesn’t require complicated ingredients or advanced cooking skills.
- Crispy and golden: Baking creates a delicate crunch throughout the sticks.
- Packed with cheddar flavor: Sharp cheddar gives the best savory cheese taste.
- Easy to customize: Add herbs, spices, or another favorite cheese.
- Great for sharing: They make an excellent party snack or appetizer.
- Made with simple ingredients: Most of what you need is probably already in your kitchen.
Ingredients
For approximately 20–24 cheese sticks, you’ll need:
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 ½ cups finely shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons cold water, plus more if needed
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley or dried parsley, optional
For the Topping
- 1 tablespoon melted butter
- ¼ cup finely shredded cheddar cheese
- A small pinch of paprika or Italian seasoning, optional
Step-by-Step Method
Step 1: Prepare the Oven
Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. This prevents the cheese sticks from sticking and also makes cleanup much easier.
For especially crisp cheese sticks, make sure your oven has fully reached temperature before putting the tray inside.
Step 2: Combine the Dry Ingredients
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, garlic powder, and smoked paprika.
Mixing these ingredients first helps distribute the seasonings evenly throughout the dough. If you’re using dried parsley, you can add it at this stage as well.
Step 3: Cream the Butter and Cheese
Place the softened butter in a separate large bowl. Beat it until smooth and creamy.
Add the shredded cheddar cheese and mix until the butter and cheese are evenly combined.
For the strongest cheddar flavor, use a sharp cheddar rather than a mild variety. Freshly shredded cheese also tends to blend into the dough more smoothly.
Step 4: Add the Egg
Beat the egg lightly in a small bowl, then add it to the butter-and-cheese mixture.
Stir until everything is well incorporated.
The mixture may look slightly uneven at this point, but that is completely fine. The flour mixture will bring everything together.
Step 5: Make the Dough
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the cheese mixture.
Stir gently until a soft dough begins to form. Add the cold water, one tablespoon at a time, only as needed.
You want a dough that holds together without being overly sticky. Avoid adding too much water because excess moisture can make the finished cheese sticks less crisp.
