Crispy Cheesy Potato Puffs: A Golden, Crunchy, Cheesy Snack Recipe
Crispy Cheesy Potato Puffs are bite-sized potato snacks made with soft mashed potatoes, melted cheese, herbs, and a crisp golden coating. They are crunchy on the outside, fluffy and cheesy on the inside, and perfect for parties, evening snacks, lunch boxes, or as a side dish with burgers, grilled chicken, or sandwiches.
This recipe is a great way to turn simple potatoes into something exciting. The inside is creamy and flavorful, while the outside becomes beautifully crisp when fried, baked, or air-fried. These potato puffs are easy to make, budget-friendly, and loved by both kids and adults.
Why You’ll Love Crispy Cheesy Potato Puffs
Crispy Cheesy Potato Puffs are special because they combine three comforting textures in one bite. The outer layer is crisp and lightly crunchy, the center is soft and fluffy, and the cheese melts into the potatoes to create a rich, savory filling.
They are also very flexible. You can make them mild and cheesy, spicy, garlicky, herby, or loaded with extra ingredients like chicken, corn, bacon, or green onions. They can be served as an appetizer, snack, or side dish.
Ingredients
For the Potato Mixture
- 4 medium potatoes, boiled and mashed
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch or all-purpose flour
- 1 egg
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ¾ teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 1 tablespoon chopped parsley or green onions
For Coating
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 1 ½ cups breadcrumbs or panko breadcrumbs
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
For Cooking
- Oil for frying
- Or cooking spray for baking/air frying
Step 1: Boil the Potatoes
Wash and peel the potatoes. Cut them into medium-sized cubes so they cook faster and evenly.
Place the potatoes in a pot of salted water and boil them until they are soft. This usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
To check if they are ready, insert a fork into a potato piece. If it slides in easily, the potatoes are cooked.
Drain the potatoes well. Let them sit for a few minutes so extra steam escapes. This is important because watery potatoes can make the mixture too soft.
Step 2: Mash the Potatoes
Transfer the cooked potatoes to a large bowl.
Mash them until smooth. You can leave a few tiny lumps if you like more texture, but the mixture should not be chunky.
Add butter while the potatoes are still warm. The butter will melt into the potatoes and make them richer and smoother.
Let the mashed potatoes cool slightly before adding the cheese and egg. If the potatoes are too hot, they may melt the cheese too early and cook the egg.
