Crispy Golden Parmesan-Crusted Baked Cheese Breadsticks
There is something irresistible about freshly baked breadsticks—especially when they come out of the oven with a crisp, golden Parmesan coating and a soft, cheesy center. These Crispy Golden Parmesan-Crusted Baked Cheese Breadsticks combine the best parts of homemade bread, melted cheese, garlic, butter, and Parmesan into one easy-to-share appetizer.
The outside develops a beautifully crunchy, savory crust while the inside stays tender and slightly chewy. They are delicious alongside pasta, soup, salad, pizza, or marinara sauce, but they are also satisfying enough to enjoy warm straight from the baking sheet.
The best part is that you do not need complicated ingredients or advanced baking skills. With a little patience while the dough rises, you can make bakery-style breadsticks right in your own kitchen.
Why These Breadsticks Are So Good
The secret is the contrast in textures. A light coating of butter and Parmesan creates a flavorful crust as the breadsticks bake, while shredded mozzarella tucked inside provides a warm, stretchy cheese center.
Garlic powder and Italian seasoning add extra flavor without overpowering the cheese. A final sprinkle of Parmesan before baking helps create those deliciously browned, crisp edges.
For the best texture, serve them while they are still warm. The Parmesan crust is at its crispiest, and the cheese inside is perfectly melted.
Ingredients
For the Breadstick Dough
- 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet active dry yeast, about 2 ¼ teaspoons
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- ¾ cup warm water
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon melted butter
For the Cheese Filling
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- ¼ cup finely grated Parmesan cheese
- ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
For the Parmesan Crust
- 3 tablespoons melted butter
- ½ cup finely grated Parmesan cheese
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 2 tablespoons shredded mozzarella, optional
- A small pinch of salt, if needed
For Serving
- Warm marinara sauce
- Ranch dressing or another favorite dipping sauce, optional
- Fresh parsley, finely chopped, for garnish
Step 1: Prepare the Yeast
Begin by adding the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast to a large mixing bowl.
The water should feel comfortably warm rather than hot. Let the mixture sit for about 5–10 minutes. The yeast should become slightly foamy on top, which indicates that it is ready to use.
If the mixture does not foam at all, the yeast may be inactive, and it is better to start again with fresh yeast before continuing.
Step 2: Make the Dough
Add the olive oil, melted butter, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir briefly to combine.
Gradually add the flour, mixing as you go. Once the dough becomes too thick to stir easily, transfer it to a lightly floured surface.
Knead the dough for approximately 5–7 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic.
The dough should feel soft and slightly tacky but should not stick heavily to your hands. If it feels extremely sticky, add flour a tablespoon at a time rather than adding a large amount at once.
Step 3: Let the Dough Rise
Place the kneaded dough into a lightly oiled bowl and turn it once so the surface is lightly coated.
Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and place it somewhere warm.
Allow the dough to rise for approximately 1 hour, or until it has noticeably increased in size.
This resting period gives the yeast time to create air pockets, helping the finished breadsticks remain light and tender rather than dense.
Step 4: Prepare the Cheese Mixture
While the dough is rising, prepare the filling.
In a small bowl, combine:
- Shredded mozzarella
- Parmesan
- Italian seasoning
- Garlic powder
Mix everything together and set aside.
Using finely grated Parmesan works especially well because it distributes evenly throughout the filling and crust.
