Crock Pot Baked Potatoes: The Ultimate Slow-Cooked Comfort Food

Crock Pot Baked Potatoes are a simple yet incredibly satisfying dish that transforms ordinary potatoes into fluffy, tender, and flavorful comfort food with almost no effort. Unlike traditional oven-baked potatoes, slow cooking allows the potatoes to gently cook over several hours, creating a soft, creamy interior while keeping the skin perfectly seasoned.

This method is ideal for busy days when you want a warm homemade meal waiting for you. Whether served as a side dish or turned into a complete meal with toppings like cheese, sour cream, bacon, chili, or vegetables, Crock Pot Baked Potatoes are versatile, affordable, and delicious.

Why Make Baked Potatoes in a Crock Pot?

Using a slow cooker offers several advantages:

  • Hands-off cooking: Once prepared, the potatoes cook without constant monitoring.
  • Energy efficient: A slow cooker uses less energy than heating a large oven.
  • Perfect texture: The slow heat creates a soft, fluffy center.
  • Great for gatherings: You can prepare several potatoes at once and keep them warm until serving.
  • Meal prep friendly: Cooked potatoes can be stored and reheated easily.

Ingredients

For the Potatoes

  • 6 large russet potatoes (or baking potatoes)
  • 2–3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1–2 teaspoons sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon dried herbs such as rosemary or Italian seasoning (optional)

Optional Toppings

  • Butter
  • Sour cream
  • Shredded cheddar cheese
  • Crispy bacon pieces
  • Green onions or chives
  • Steamed broccoli
  • Chili
  • Pulled chicken or beef
  • Ranch dressing
  • Fresh herbs

Step 1: Choose the Right Potatoes

For the best Crock Pot Baked Potatoes, choose russet potatoes.

Russet potatoes contain a high amount of starch, which gives them a light and fluffy texture after cooking. Their thick skin also holds up well during the long cooking process.

Choose potatoes that are:

  • Similar in size so they cook evenly.
  • Firm with smooth skin.
  • Free from soft spots, sprouts, or green areas.

Step 2: Wash and Prepare the Potatoes

Wash the potatoes thoroughly under cold running water.

Use a vegetable brush to remove dirt from the skin because the skin becomes part of the final dish.

Dry each potato completely with a clean towel.

Drying helps the oil and seasoning stick properly.

Step 3: Pierce the Potatoes

Using a fork, poke several holes around each potato.

Make about 5–8 small holes per potato.

This allows steam to escape during cooking and prevents the potatoes from splitting while they soften.

Step 4: Season the Potato Skins

Place the potatoes in a large bowl.

Coat them with olive oil, making sure the entire surface is covered.

Sprinkle with:

  • Sea salt
  • Black pepper
  • Garlic powder
  • Herbs (if using)

Rub the seasoning into the skins.

The oil helps create a flavorful outer layer while the salt enhances the natural potato flavor.

Step 5: Wrap the Potatoes (Optional)

For softer skins, wrap each potato individually in aluminum foil.

This creates a steamed baking effect and keeps the potatoes moist.

However, if you prefer slightly firmer skins, you can place them directly into the slow cooker without foil.

Both methods work well.
